Hi all, a quick note to let folk know that if you have workwear that your company provide and has a company logo/name on it and you wash it at home you can clam tax back on it for up to six years and then continue to receive a tax allowance to wash your workwear after that.
a few guys in my work including me have sent a letter into the tax office and have received this allowance in return.
not sure how many are aware of this but its best to pass on the info.
 
used to do this for work overalls in the 80's, did'nt know it was still on the statute book

much is it worth?
do you have a template of the letter?
 
It doesn't have to have the logo, but your employer does have to provide it free.

Those who have to buy their uniform, logoed or not, are not eligible for this.
 
how would you go about cliaming anything back i have worked for asda for 7yrs now and never knew you could do this ?
 
Hi, i think it was roughly £140 per year it works out at. and the letter my mate got was about £800 for the last 6 years he will get back.

it was just a draughted letter with your name, address, postcode, NI number, and current tax code on it.

Dear sir/madam

it has come to my attention that i am entitled to claim a tax rebate for the laundering of employer issued logo workwear.
My employer has been issuing me with protective logo workwear since ****(insert year) and i would like to claim the high rate laundering allowance, which i believe can be back dated for approx 6 years.

yours faithfully


enclosed: most recent payslip.
(to show that no laundering allowance is paid)

send it to your local tax office and see what happens,
mine took 2 months to process and i phoned them to find out and they told me my letter is on its way to me so i will get it in the next few days.
 
And then you guys moan that the country is in the shit....look at you guys claming freaking tax wash! So what you have to wash your work close? if they didn't pay it what would you do? got dirty to work?! c'om!

no offence but i think the working man/woman is entitled to claim any tax relief they can,
i personally have worked for 18 years and paid my tax so claiming back what i am LEGALLY entitled to is not a problem.
what IS the problem is the spongers who DONT WORK but can work and just bleeding the system.
 
lol i don't understand why if your employer provides you with free work clothes you get an allowance for washing them?

But if you have to buy your own uniforms you pay to wash them yourself, as well as paying the cost of the clothes? :err:

You can claim tax that you are entitled to but that is being a bit to stingy!
What next? if I walk to work I will claim Shoes allowance?

well if theres an allowance for that i will claim it also :banana:

seriously i dont make the rules i just play by them, if you think the working man/woman shouldnt be entitled to this then by all means write to the government and voice your opinions to them. after all there the people who make these rules.
 
i went through this last year,

i had to supply 6 years worth proof of earnings unemployment and employment then found out i owed the tax man £345 lol

god knows how they worked that out :err:

As the supermarket slogan goes; every little helps ;)

In all seriousness though. This is money the Government have decided they're not entitled to. As with most tax rebates though, you have to ask for it back.

I think the way it's viewed is that you are, in effect, doing the company's laundry. However, as it was something I was told rather than found out myself, I did double check the HMRC website...

Turns out persons who have to buy their uniform (e.g. JJB staff) and/or personal protective equipment (PPE) are eligible for a separate, but similar, tax relief. One which includes the cost of cleaning, repairing or replacing that uniform/PPE: HM Revenue & Customs: Tax relief for specialist tools or clothing
