mate has a shuttlex pc and it wont boot up.. nothing on screen no beeps from POST

I have stripped it down to the very barebone no ram, no graphics card, no hdd, no dvd drive yet I get no beeps at all .. even cleared cmos

is the motherboard knackered or could it be the processor

Its a socket 462 AMD Duron/Athlon/Athlon XP motherboard

This is a common problem of Shuttle XP's. A friend of mine has had a few now ... press the power and nothing happens ... BUT wait 5 mins then it suddenly comes on. Problem was fixed by replacing some caps in the PSU.

Same here, managed to pick up a PSU off fleabay for a tenner. Seems like a common fault.

I see, another shitty piece of kit if this is a common problem

if the PSU is faulty, I still get all the signs off a working machine, fans fire up, HDD spin up and DVD Drive light flashes, power light on .. just no post or beeps

even a small green light on motherboard is on, which I assume means power to motherboard.

If the power light on the motherboard is coming on then I am guessing CPU.

I would still suspect the PSU. All that means is that the PSU is not completly dead - but could still be fault. Test with a normal ATX PSU mounted outside of the case.

used another PSU that works in another PC and still get same problem, so CPU or motherboard is dead

Hackmax is right that this is a common problem with these shuttle xpc's. I'm unlikely to agree it is the processor. If it isnt the PSU then it will be caps on the motherboard. I have repaired many of these through the years, various versions. They all suffer from weak capacitor components and I've never had 1 that was a processor. For sure it's always the psu or motherboard caps.

sounds similiar to those shitty acer aspire mini computers that dont know if they are a laptop or computer

personally it is more down to cheap components and lack of space - overtime with more and more dust build up temps increase inside the box and components become more and more stressed

as you got a 462 cpu then look for any chips or cracks on cpu thermal surface and underneath look for any discolouration to indicate overheating - if cpu looks fine then it is most likely mobo

I will try and found out tonight. I have a PSU tester, I'll see what it things.

reading a forum dedicated to ther Shuttle PC's and this is a common fault where for no reason who so ever the motherboard becomes dead or a duff BIOS - can be fixed by replacing the BIOS .. out of the posts I read on that forum, I would say 5% of people suffered this problem.
