Ive never actually read a book, am more of a news paper(the sun) man and magazines (t3)

but people say i should read.. so i thought ok let me try reading a book..

where the hell do i start, just don't know what to read..
dont want any biography's or anything, just a good book which ill be happy to read..

age wise, am in the 20s so something cool and exciting

In Scotland we have buildings stocked with thousands of books where you can go and borrow them for 4 weeks then return them free of charge, i'm surprised it's not caught on everywhere else.

That sounds like a good idea m8..but I don't read a whole book in 4 weeks ... I would if I could, but there is work, baby son, courses I just can't find the time...I normally just read at night before bed but in bed lol and weekends.

You can pick up some good bargains at flea markets and car boots, the mrs never pays more than 10p for a good paperback. She reads so much when she goes to bed that I got sick of all the books stacked up, I got her a ebook reader and downloaded 5400 books for it, now she's happy and I got rid of all the stacks of books.

As far as what to read, I suppose it's all down to personal choice. I used to read Sven Hassell books, but not for years, Stephen King and James Herbert are goof for horror, but being 20 you've seen all the films, which would spoil it a bit.

Start with the classics mate, some suggestions:

1984 - George Orwell
Catch 22 - Joseph Heller
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
Brave new world - Aldous Huxley
American Psycho - Brett easton-ellis

What kinds of subjects are you interested in? Perhaps we could then offer somemore books.

For horror he should go for any Richard Layman book Captin. He is one sick man, and as far as I know there are no film adaptations.
Last 3 i've read are Shutter Island, Muse biography and Frankie Boyles book. Amazingly, Frankies was the worst of the 3, now I know why it was half price!

Janobis correct in asking your chosen types of subject, it would help with any recommendations.

Horrors are always a good place to start, try some classic stephen king ones. i quite like the andy mcnab ones, ok for a bit of fun and excitement - nothing too heavy. Even the classic Ian flemming james bond ones are ok.

Then, look at a few thrillers.

I like horror and scifi, try The Stand by Stephen King, the Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, or Swansong or They Thirst by Robert R McCammon.

I've been reading the Rebus series by Ian Rankin and find them really good. Perhaps not the kind of book you only read occasionally.

Irvine Welsh is one fucked up cookie worth checking out.

I'm not a big reader so that's about it.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is great. Nice skinny one (The Gunslinger) to get started then on to the other 6!

Science fiction, Peter F Hamilton is really good. Not as fond of Ian M Banks, but Banks "Crow Road" is brilliant.

Herbert's "Rats" trilogy is great as well, get them for buttons in flea markets/charity shops now they're so old.

Never enjoyed the classics, tbh, felt more like I was reading them just so I could say I had.

The film is terrible compared to the book. Dont get me wrong when hes going on about the suits and music for 5 pages its a bore, but you cannot seriously think the film was good compared to the book?

And the film didnt have half of the gore that the book had. The rat scene, the beheading of the woman, and what he does with it.

Yeah, agree there. 2 exceptions for me are (like i said) American Psycho and Misery. My friends were all reading AP at the time and raving about it: I got bored REAL fast reading pages about red snapper for dinner and Huey Lewis and the News. Saw the film many years later and enjoyed it so much more.

But no nail guns in the film from what I remember, and certainly no rat/hamster in a tube!
