Manchester United football shirts have been banned in parts of Malaysia because the image of the famed red devil is forbidden in Islam.
Muslim leaders ruled that images on football shirts of crosses, alcohol brands and devils are an insult to Allah and should not be worn.
Manchester United is a hugely popular brand in the Muslim-majority country and the club's summer tour last year included two games against a Malaysia XI played in front of capacity 40,000 crowds.
Other football shirts deemed unacceptable include Brazil, Portugal, Serbia, Barcelona and Norway because their crests all carry images of a cross. "There is no excuse for wearing such garments because it means, as a Muslim, you are idolising the symbol of another religion," said Datuk Nooh Gadot, the Mufti of Johor state. The Mufti of Perak, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, said that Muslims wearing such football shirts "leads to a path of sin".
In March, Manchester United signed a sponsorship deal with communications group Telekom Malaysia, further raising their profile as the leading sports team in the country.
"Anyone who went on our tour of the Far East last summer knows the strength of feeling that Malaysians have for the club," David Gill, the Manchester United chief executive, said.
Malaysian supporters of the club expressed anger at the ban on fan websites.

Since when has banning a man utd shirt been a bad idea

I'm thinking of converting :roflmao:

last summer, i told my 5 year old boy to get a top on, he was messing around, so i just grabed one, and said here, put this on, 20 seconds later, i was having a full blown row with a 4 year old lol

now i dont follow footy at all, bunch of overpaid poofs, the lot of em, but my boy started to cry, over a T shirt, so i asked what was wrong, and i had to try my best not to laugh, but he said

dad, its a man U top, and i support chelsea, please dont make me wear it

lolol

blackburn , few years back, no more santas grotto , no more santa , because it would offend the asian customers.

thats 100% truth, as i used to work there.

The true Malaysian, Man United Supporters will have to wear it under there Burka till they are in the pub then.

What is this world coming to all be in loin cloths or fig leaves in a bit cos that what they wore in the beginning of time or so they say.

Christmas light switch on for Blackburn and Darwen

Blackburn's Christmas lights are now sparkling as the town's fantastic Christmas programme got under way last weekend.

Former Blue singer, and now solo artist, Simon Webbe pressed the button in Blackburn on Saturday, November 14.

Simon, who also appeared in 2008’s “I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here,” turned on the lights with 107 the Bee. The fun started at 4pm with fireworks commencing at 6pm.

Attention now turns to Darwen where former X-Factor star Chico is set to light things up this Saturday, November 21.

Chico, famous for asking audiences what time is it to which they reply, “it’s Chico time”, will switch Darwen’s lights on from 4pm.

Thousands of pounds have been spent on new lights this year both in Blackburn and Darwen town centres and Blackburn market.

The focus of Blackburn’s Christmas festivities is the giant Ferris wheel, similar to the London and Manchester eyes.

The 33-metre wheel will be installed on the town hall square in King William Street throughout December.

It has 24 carriages which hold four people each and takes around a minute to revolve, giving fantastic views of the town centre and beyond. And at just £1 a ride, everyone can have a go.

It will be running every day and in the evening from Thursday, December 10 for four weeks. And it will be accompanied by Christmas themed food stalls. The giant wheel, which is being supplied by Jan De Koning who is based in the North West, will be set up from Sunday, December 6.

In Darwen, the popular ice rink is back on December 19, 20 and 21, accompanied by lots of festive fun including Punch and Judy, Darwen Brass Band, balloon modelling, giant inflatables and much more.

A host of other events are planned including a Santa’s Grotto at Blackburn Market.

thats brilliant mate , as stated it was a few years ago, and it was in the telegraph as well as getting the memo to the market stall holders which is how i know, as i had the stall right next to the grotto, this would be quite a few years back, say around 7-8, you loverly quote doesnt seem to have a year on it that i could be arsed looking for. Wether it went through or not in all honesty i cant remember not long after i left the stall, but take it as you will bud.

It was last year.

I googled to see if there was any mention of a ban of Santa or his grotto in either Blackburn or Wolverhampton: couldn't find anything.

well your just gonna have to take my word for it then, but i had the memo to all stall holders in my hand, and even went to the meeting (which was compulsory for all stall holders / employees).

unfortunatly this is only the tip of the ice burg, here is another little story from that neck of the woods that will never make the papers
