Beer lovers, cheers! The drink is one of the healthiest alcoholic beverages available, when taken in moderation, a new study has claimed.

According to the study, commissioned by The Beer Academy, the drink is a rich source of vitamins, fibre, minerals and antioxidants and has relatively low calorific value as compared to other alcoholic beverages.

"Beer contains vitamins which can help you to maintain a well-balanced healthy diet, fibre to keep you regular, readily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon which may help to lower your risk of osteoporosis," a spokeswoman was quoted by the 'Daily Mail' as saying.

A survey found that while 68 per cent of people consider beer to be Britain's national drink, some 10 per cent wrongly believe that it contains fat, and 13 per cent believe the beverage is made from chemicals and not barley and hops.

The study also explores the psychological and sociability benefits of people enjoying a pint in their local pub -- yet pubs are closing at a rate of 39 a week. It argues the pub is at the heart of every community and a place where people go to enjoy company and find out local news.

Pete Brown, an award-winning author, said: "Still, we persist in the myth that somehow beer is an inferior drink to foreign imports such as wine. From Government receptions through to weddings and business occasions, wine rather than beer is served.

"It has been fashionable to look down on our own national drink in favour of overseas imports. But to do that is to turn our backs on our great British success story and our own heritage, and miss out on the myriad tastes and complexities that beer can offer."

You might find that they are refering to real ale... Drinking lagar is like drinking piss compaired to a real live in a the barrel beer...

Yep!

On another note since I started drinking Cider i don't suffer hangovers anymore :) I was at a friends house a few weeks ago and he only had lager so I had my usual intake, Boy 'o boy did I suffer for it the next day!

That tells me that lager is full of shit. I can't say that I'll ever consume more than a couple of cans of lager in one sitting ever again.

Last Saturday I was bladdered at a BBQ after consuming 2 x bottles of home made red wine and 8 cans of Strongbow, I was a fresh as a daisy the following morning :)

Lol, I'm the oposite, cider and wine give me thumping hangovers if I drink enough of them. People call me a wine snob becasue I will only drink nice wine/beer and call a shit wine a shit wine if that's what it is while other people are sat there going 'ohhhhh, that's nice'... The sort of people who have never in their entire lives commented on a bad wine, which is totally impossible!!!! Just any wine they taste is nice!!!

But if you drink shit wine and chemical laden cheapo lagar like Carling or what-have-you, then your hangover will be twice as bad.

Only ever seem to get drunk by accident these days anyway, I don't go looking for it, just like tasting different ales and are quite lucky in Liverpool as it a bit of a real ale capital on England as you can see from my avitar. Sometimes the different combinations and random percengtages on the real ales can blow your head off and catch you totally off gaurd!!

Fook me,,the last time a combined wine with cider it went horribly wrong and looked like a scene from the Exorcist.
A do suffer from cider hangovers but thats probably caused by mixing it wae Tenents lager.;)

Aye, probably the most fattening though mate with all the sugar in it. Most life long cider drinkers you see have no teeth and massive guts, lol... Probably best to eat an apple and wash it down with a pint of something dark and nutty!

The problem with drinking beer or cider is it makes you pee too much. That's why most women prefer wine or spirits :)

any excuse does then witchy. :)

Beer contains vitamins that can help you maintain a healthy and balanced diet, fiber to keep you solid, easily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon, which can help reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Although still a kind of myth that beer is lower for foreign goods, like wine. Receptions government through marriages and business opportunities, the wine instead of beer is served.
