iPhone restore 3gs

hi, dont want to hack this phone just want to restore it. i have got it to recovery mode, then connect to itunes, then it goes through the initial process & then itunes displays a message "the iphone could not be restored. this device isnt eligible for the requested build"
i thought it was just that specific phone, so tried my daughters, which has been restored before & got the same thing.
i have tried it on the laptop as well now, but getting the same thing.
pc running xp, laptop running vista.
any ideas, or is anybody else having the same problem ?

maybe you need to update itunes to latest version 9.2

Have you a back up to restore from if not update iTunes and download os4 the new update then if you want to jailbreak using redsn0w 4.0 in the other threads

From the sounds of things your trying to downgrade, or use an earlier IPA than the phone has had on it. Is the problem your having with 3.1.2 by any chance? And your actually on 3.1.3? If you try and restore using 3.1.3 I would assume that it would work perfectly well.
