My PS2 Slimline developed a fault a while ago where the disk doesn't spin, I've cheated both lid sensors and the laser moves in and out. I've checked the fuses on the main board and they all apear to be ok.
Earlier in the week I bought a new replacment laser/motor assembly but still have exactly the same problem. So the laser has been replaced, the motor/spindle has been replaced.

So as it stands at the moment I can cheat both door switchs and the laser comes out and then returns back to the side but no attempt for the drive to spin. I've just tried it without a disk in and the laser moves up and down as well, but I can see no visible laser light. Should it be visible to the naked eye ?

Thanks
Simon

Yes, you should be able to see a red dot, but it depends on the thickness of the inserted disc.

had this myself and posted on here about it ..i never found out what was causing it not to spin ...
but was looking for the chip that controls the spinning it used to be a ba chip or a la chip in the older ps2 in the slim im not sure ...
hope someone can had to this as i too would like to fix the problem thanks ....

There is definately no red light coming from the laser. I put a peice of paper of the laser , cheated the door senors, laser moved into middle and moved up and down but could see no red laser dot through the paper.

It's a new laser and assembly so it must be something on the main board, anyone got any ideas what ?

Sorted !

As mentioned above I replaced the lsaer/drive unit and boticed that no light appeared to be coming from the laser. After a very long search I found the thread listed below on another forum:

http://psx-scene.com/forums/ps2-general-discussion/39307-ps2-slimline-laser-success.html

I had a look at the connection shown in this thread and I had a complete blob of solder connecting three connections to the laser together, apparently this is done to stop static getting to the laser during transportation. I got out the soldering iron and solder sucker and removed the additional solder which was connecting the three connections together. Put the unit back in the playstation and it now works perfect. I would have saved a lot of time if the supplier had advised that this would need removing before use !

There are some images attached from the initial article.

sorry to hijack your thread m8 but i am havin a problem with the kids ps2. the disc spins but the laser dont make any attempt to move, the laser is on though. could i be needing a new laser ?

Sounds like a different fault to what I had, so your laser does light up and the disk does spin but the laser doesn't move from front to back ?
Sounds like it could be the ribbon cable to the motor on the shaft or the motor itself ?

I could send you the motor and shaft with ribbon cable from the old assembly I removed from Playstation as this part of it does work. It is a PS slimline is it ?

the laser just moves from the outside to the inside of the cd then just stays there. seems like it just aint reading the disc.

so you close the lid or cheat the door switches and the laser moves from rear to middle but the disk doesn't spin ?
Can you see a red light coming from the laser once it's moved to the middle ?
You should also see the laser lift up and down a couple of times ?

cheat the door switches, laser is on and moves to the middle of the disk which is spining fine and stays there.

tried it without a disk and the laser does lift up and down a couple of times.
