Hi all,

My old tv ( a whopping 28" tescos cheapy) has given up the ghost so Im forced to get with the times and buy a flatscreen.

However after searching the web and looking at pixels and contrast and HD ready and full HD etc etc I have realised that I havent absorbed any of the info I have read and have no idea which is the best value for money.

So can anyone point me in the right direction?

Im after a 37" as any bigger would look silly in my room. And for around £500 ish I dont particularly need the best but I dont want one thats poopy.

Help me obi wan... your my only hope.....

Thanks,

Regards

kev.

I'm not clued up to which are the best buys at the moment but you'd do yourself a favour to go for a 32" or 40"-42".

37" is a bit more of an uncommon size and therefore tends to be a little pricier in my experience. There's not a massive difference between 37" and 40" at all to be honest in terms of how big they look.

Samsung LE37R87BDX LCD TV

Panasonic TH37PX80 Plasma TV

Toshiba 37C3030DB LCD TV

I would go in this order Panasonic as first choice, then samsung and lastly Toshiba!

Let me know how u get on i might be able to help you in picking!

The picture on panasonic will be the best from all the link posted by me and others so far if i was in your shoes i'd go for the Panasonic its god value mate

Panasonic TH37PX80 Plasma TV is not full HD.

go for this http://www.johnlewis.com/230475911/Product.aspx

i just ordered it waiting for it to arrive. picture seems great in HD

in fact none of the above are full HD. go for this mate check it out at your local comet they should have it with a HD source looks great!

@uncle kev. firstly depending on how far you sit from the set, a HD ready set will suffice, in stead of a full HD set.

secondly i wouldnt go for an LCD, the Plasma's are able to produce a better picture. I would consider getting the th37px80, its not full HD but with a screen that size you wont be able to see the benefits of full HD. If you search around you should be able to pick it up fairly cheap.

it depens on what his primary use is also its no good getting a full HD tv if you are going to use SD sources! Besides for the budget of kev i selected what are arguably the best tvs

the one you show is just off 700 notes so that too needs consideration!

I have a tosh 37" av503/4/5 series (newer than the Toshiba 37C3030DB LCD TV
) and can reccomend that, it's not full hd but does the job really well, there really is no blur!!! and has great picture. You can get the xv503/4/5 full hd for relatively cheap too and these are very reccomended on the avforums.com

Avoid anything Hanspree (my memory of it just mad me shudder as I'm typing), i had a 37av-jt02 and gt03 before sending them back (they didn't want to but a Visa reversal made them :D)... awefull telly's,, blurry on dark scenes and sports, and also the most awefull color pallete i could ever have imagined.

anyway heres a nice link for getting bargain on tv's... http://www.lcd-tv-prices.co.uk/index.php?theme=4674e74da4a64f19ad4e6566e76cbd58

strictly speaking not true :)........generally for SD sources a HD ready set would be better as theres less to upscale to ... HOWEVER the quality of the picture upscale/downscale is determined buy the processing power of the TV you buy......i've seen a pioneer full HD set and it blows every TV out there for SD material (all except the broadcast monitors).

@uncle kev
however for your price range i suspect the panasonic would be best suited to your budget/performance ratio. The LG/Samsung are good for the budget but the reliability/build can be questionable. I guess the individual has to go down to a shop and take a look at it with his own eyes. But i would be cautious at looking at a screen at places like comet etc as they dont show real SD/HD feeds in real life lighting conditions.

It might be worth waiting for a couple of months as SONY has indicated it is going to release a new range of LCDs using triluminous LED technology, apparently with performance that will eclipse the pioneer for black levels and fine detail......i guess we will have to wait and see
