Sony CEO Howard Stringer has attacked the Nintendo Wii, claiming that it is a "niche device".

In an interview at the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, Stringer said the Wii is not a true games console because it does not offer support for high-definition movies.

"I've played a Nintendo Wii. I don't see it as a competitor. It's more of an expensive niche game device. We're selling a lot of PlayStation 3s now and it's still the best way to buy a Blu-ray player," he said.

Sony's PlayStation 3, although the most technologically robust console, has so far trailed behind the Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in sales due to its high retail price.

Microsoft director Aaron Greenberg earlier described the Wii as a "novelty".

He is not wrong but said it because he is jealous of their sales.

totally agree with you mate the for nintendo has been an unbelievable success

Sony actually had something similar in the eye toy but never really had the vision to follow it through. When the wii came out I thought it was pure crap and my daughter got one which has since been customed...lol. Its was more of a party piece then but they have since had wii fit and then the new jogging one which has tapped into another market with people who want to keep fit. Nintendo dont care if the graphics are not HD, they have sales to prove they have created something which appeals to lots. I still thnk its crap though but you cant knock the sales.

My wii is used every week, we have people round every friday/weekend etc and if we are all in we use it as a party game. Pretty funny when you have had a couple.

The only proper game I bought for it is No More Heroes, which is very good.

What exactly has high-definition movies got to do with a games console ?

Surely, by definition, a true games console would only offer games and nothing else. If it offers some other functions then its a hybrid multifunction device rather than a true anything !

I have all 3, Wii, 360 and PS3, and I agree with most of you, the Wii is a fun system, its not so good on your own, although there are a few games thats ok, the 360, cant knock it, its a great games machine, and movie streamer, and now the PS3, where do I start, great movie machine, but was that the real reason I got it when it first came out, no, maybe now people are jumping on the bluray band wagon, and then seeing the games side of it as the second option, movies first then oh, it plays games as well, so you are getting different owners of the PS3, the games are slowly coming through, when the ps2 was launched, it had such a massive new catalogue of games that it was a total success overnight, the PS3 had what exactly on its launch, apart from RR7 and a couple others?? Now I like SONY, but its taking them a bloody long time ( or developers ) to get their games house in order, how long for GT5??? I just think that a lot of people are buying the PS3 now as a bluray player first, so yes, sales are rising, but is it for the games side, only time will tell, I just want better games as its really not even scratched the surface of how powerful this machine is, as most games are out on the 360 as well so are just re done to work on the PS3, only PS3 titles only look better in my opinion to warrent the price, MGS4, great game etc, race driver grid, is it really that much difference from the 360's dual layer, nope, as its been ported like so many other games. What they should do is write games for the PS3 then dilute them down to work on the other systems, instead, because the 360 has the bigger market, its all based around that, then just ported so you dont see really that much difference.

That kind of contradicts himself there, games machine one minute, then bluray, like I said, a lot of sales are for people who want bluray and aint really bothered about the games but might dabble, the PS3 is not a games machine, its a media player
