Just got one of those energy meters, you connect to the incoming phase of your house. To monitor the KW/hr you are using.

Feck me, I think I will be turning a few things off!

Its not 100% accurate, as the incoming voltage will change to give an incorrect wattage. But it will be good for delta changes and monitoring!

i think i would freek with what i spend ,but i add a wee magic black bx lol without this i would be in the poor house lol

Is it some sort of CT that goes round the tails or do you have to hard wire it in m8???

You'll be in the shower for half the time now lol

At some time in the past, was it possible to draw power through the shaded-pole induction meter with a reactive load without it registering?

wee black box?

Cheers

i think he means the blackbox for fiddleing the meter m8 {only works on the wheel type meters} transformer sends the wheel the wrong way

easy to make from a battery charger "but dangerous"

Yes its a CT, just clips round the phase going to the CU.

I have a combi boiler, thank feck but it does draw an amp when the fan is running lol....

I went round the house last night, turning everything off lol, while watching the current reading and the pence per hour!

Thats the one £30 form B&Q

chris i use a clamp meter to check out the amps i was using and i was shocked myself lol.

I pay about £340 a quarter and was so annoyed i started testing everything turning it all off and one by one turning it on again.

fooking tumble dryer was taking up 11amps and she uses that every day... bought her a retractable line for the garden and now she is using that.

turned on the spot lights and the downstairs was drawing 7 amps ffs... bought her 3 nice lamps with energy savers in and now its 0.4amps :)

old washing machine was taking 9 amps so bought an A+ rated washing machine.

I heard about these phase things before that turns the wheel backwards but i think when an meter reader comes rund and see's the thing going backwards lol he might think what the fook.

But saying that if it was put on a timer and set for midnight :) and for say 3 hours it might be alright would also depend ho fast it made the clock spin backwards ?

BUT TOTTALY ILLEGAL AND WE DONT CONDONE THAT!

but without out all that you can reduce bills by using energy saving bulbs, buying A+ rated machines and putting your washing out (when its not fooking raining lol) on a line and washing up your dishes (just like thy used to in the olden days).... turn things off and not leave on standby.

I got one of these pre pay meters an use around £10-15 per week, got 3 bed mid with 3 kids... dont think its too bad really tbh, tv is on all day so is pc's.

although everything is turned off at the wall at night, less the fridge and bits that have to stay on. but tv, pc, dvd, tv box, etc are all off at the wall.

I bought one of these last year - Wireless Energy-Saving Meter

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=220934&doy=13m7

made a few changes to bad habits like switching stuff off rather than leaving on standby etc...
when the washing machine / dishwasher is on they were drawing anything upto 2 kW, most machines these days have a timer on so we set these now to run overnight when the economy 7 kicks in. 3 spotlights in the kitchen each drawing 50kW and the kitchen lights were on most on the time during the darker winters nights have now been change to a single 56kW fluorescent tube which also gives us better light.

Worth investing in an energy meter, least you can see whats eating up your power. This one also has an alarm on it so you can set it to say 5kW and when the power consumption goes over that the bells start ringing so you can investigate whats going on.

no m8 too dangerous {i wont be the 1 to tell you }

made 1 for a m8 {must be over 20 years ago}--instead of pulling the 2 wires out together {he only pulled the 1 and it shorted out on a gas pipe}

blew a fu"*in big hole in the pipe and the gas started comeing out like a flamethrower and set fire to the stairs-----{obviously he was pissed and only singed his muzzy and eyebrows} "he was lucky besides being a dickhead"

FFS!!!

I just calculated how much it costs me to run my PC for a year, based on the current price and the pph cost...fecking 219 quid!

It will now be getting turned off!

surprising how much they use

how did you calculate it?

I worked mine out on a 300W PSU so uses just under 1 kWh every 3 hours, average kWh is around 18p so just under 1.50 every day if it's left on all the time
