If I told you that I would have to kill you.
Hi Guys,

I really enjoy photography and am thinking of getting my first ever Digital SLR camera.
All I have ever used before is a standard digital camera.

Just as an example, I want to be able to take shots like a flower which is in focus and the background is out of focus i.e. foreground in focus and background not in focus

Can anyone recommend some good choices for a beginner?

Cheers,

mas123:banana:

The shot you describe m8 is by using the f/stop numbers on the aperture settings like f2 f4 f5.6 etc
Most digital slr will have a manual setting so you can control these.
Best bet is to go to a good camera shop and handle them to see how they feel in your hands, weight, grip etc and don't just go for the highest pixel count, Nikon, Canon are very good but you need lenses and they can be very expensive the fuji i have doesn't but is still a great camera s9600.

Its all depends on how much do you want to spend mate, but if you'are a beginner start with Canon EOS 450 DSLR...

Probably no more than £300 mate...

Cheapest decent brand I could find at £300 is the Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-nikon-d40-18-55-lens-kit.htm

Word of warning the Nikon lenses aren't cheap.

Other than that the cheapest I've found is the Pentax K200D for £369 after cashback (Jacobs), and the Canon 40D body only for £400 after cashback (Jessops).

[edit]
The black and silver verions of the D40 are £289.99 at Jessops. This will let you play with the camera first for weight, grip and image quality...

Good thing with Pentax and Canon is that some of their old NON digital camera lenses will fit the digital bodies and can be picked up cheaper second hand.
One thing that put me off the slr type was that the slightest bit of dust on the shutter or inbetween lens and body when changing lens will completely ruin shots.

Same for Nikon.

True, most nikkor lenses fit modern nikon bodies regardless of whether film or digital.

Easily cleaned, either yourself or in a repair shop for not very much.

Biggest worry of any photographer is fungus in the lens. An expensive repair that can be cheaper to replace the whole lens when looking at the budget lenses.

Sony slr has a minolta mount and the lenses from 35mm minoltas can be used on them and are cheap to pick up.

Didn't know that.

got you more details nara My son has a sony. He had minolta slr 35mm and bought a sony 10 mega digital slr and the lenses fitted.
Any konica / minolta af lens will work. He says there are compatabilty lists on the net.
He was picking up lenses for 20 and 30 pounds.
The camera is the dogs as well it does everything m8

Konica/Minolta retired from the camera market a few years ago. Sony bought that arm of the K/M company and relaunched the α range (the Dynax range where known as Minolta α in Japan).

EOS cameras have automatic sensor cleaning. Which is supposed to shake dust off.

You'll want haze and polarizing filters also and a tripod if you want to do close-ups especially if you are using depth of field ( foreground focused, background unfocussed or vice versa).

If you are new to photography you will probably only use 10% of the features on a quality SLR.

Canon EOS cameras easily out sell other SLRs, bear that in mind when choosing 'cos there are more second hand accessories out there.
