Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are closing the case, Portuguese media have reported.

Her parents Kate and Gerry McCann are both official suspects in the inquiry, along with a third man, Robert Murat.

But two newspapers claim the police have said they plan to close the case because of a lack of evidence.

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leics, was three when she disappeared in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007. The family said they were awaiting confirmation of the reports.

The Correio da Manha newspaper said on Tuesday that sources within Portugal's judicial police said they "do not have sufficient evidence to allow formal charges to be brought against the McCanns in the disappearance of their daughter".

The Jornal de Noticias said the police did not have enough evidence to charge either the McCanns or Mr Murat with any wrongdoing.

"The police have not found the guilty," the paper added.

One newspaper said the case had already been closed, while another said the end of the investigation would be announced within the next few days.

The BBC's Alison Roberts, in Portugal, said reports suggested the case had been "archived" or shelved, meaning police would no longer devote resources to investigating it.

She said it could be reopened if new evidence emerged, but officers would not be actively working on it.

The McCanns were declared official suspects - "arguidos" in Portuguese legal jargon - last September.

Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell told the BBC the couple did not know yet whether the reports were correct.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell gives his reaction

"If they are true, it's to be welcomed that Kate and Gerry are not to face any charges," Mr Mitchell said.

"It's quite right. They are innocent of any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance. They have suffered enough in this process.

"And surely the Portuguese authorities, if this is true, must lift their arguido status as a priority."

Mr Mitchell said the family wanted to know whether police now planned to stop searching for Madeleine.

If so, he said, all the information held by the police must be made public so the McCanns could carry on their own hunt.

"What happens to all those leads, all those contacts? There are thousands of pieces of information in those files," he said.

"What we don't want is that information to lie on a shelf somewhere gathering dust."

Mr and Mrs McCann are due to go to the High Court on 7 July to ask a judge to order police files on the disappearance of their daughter to be released.

The BBC's correspondent said the period of judicial secrecy surrounding the case was due to end in August.

Briton Mr Murat lives with his mother in Praia da Luz close to the apartment where Madeleine was last seen. He strongly denies any involvement in her disappearance.

His lawyer said he had heard nothing from the Portuguese authorities about the case being closed.

According to the trial by media the parents killed her and the police screwed the investigation up. I guess that's a fair summary and the likely one.

On what evidence do you come to that conclusion? Or are you just trying to be controversial?

Lets be honest and admit the media screwed it up from the start. I just hope she isnt suffering now.

no sure lm with u there m8 .. think the police letting the dustbin man empty all the hotel bins was a big big cock up ..

I think portugal police would not want to admit what was going on there in the country because they rely on tourism so much.

Hence maddie is just a small fish in the big pond wonder how many other kids have went missing anybody got any stats out of curiousity.

They hide child abduction as bad as the UK hide teenage gang culture and murders

If tourism was a major factor in this case, I would find it hard to accept they would then blame the parents - who were tourists.

deffo a good point she always looked shifty to me but anybody would always feel dubious pointing the blame I do think children go missing alot abroad though big problem compared to the uk

I would be interested to know why you think it is a major problem, and where the problem exists.

dont know if this was directed at my response but didnt it come out that another child was taking from the same resort area a few years earlier and the fact that they were getting taken to morroco etc in the uk if a child goes missing there normally found assualted are dead in 48 hours but aboard in these countrys they seem to vanish ?

im no expert just what a read so if im wrong thats ok just what I see maybe someone can show some stats im usless at finding info

yup, it was directed at you.

I also recall hearing about another child abducted under similar circumstances a while before Madeline disappeared. However, thats a big leap to make in saying that there is widespread child abduction taking place in europe.

I just saw a documenrty a few month ago which stated that places around that area has a ghost factor that the kids go missing and are never found unlike other countrys which have success in finding a body are a harmed child think it was on the discovery channel are discovery crime etc (THE first 48 HOURS) so thats were I seen it.

Im sure the wouldnt lie on the discovery channel lol

fair enough.

I would have assumed that this would have been fairly major news for the media whores during the investigation though.

I will have a google on it tomorrow and see if i can pull some stats up as im sure lots of folk would be intrested if going aboard for the 6 weeks holiday

However Id never leave my kids alone not even out my sight unless they were in a controlled cresh and i was still waiting at the outway gate and always have them at arms reach so i would not worry personaly

On the evidence in the British newspapers possibly..

Oh I saw a little bout the case on the TV as well, not much coverage bout it as it wasn't a very big case. The media failed to report much on the story.

What is controversial about this?

Your suggestion that it's a fair and likely summary that her parents killed her.

Maybe if the media had reported a bit more on the case we would have a better idea about what really happened. It is such a shame when a story like this goes unnoticed and we have to make up our minds from listening to Portuguese radio via Long Wave.

The minute they walked out to go boozing and left the kids alone, they were responsible end of.
I think I heard on the news that a women who left her nipper to go out was given 18months jail
What did the piss head Mccans get a stack of money in the bank and a load of free trips around the world

At the end of the day, we dont need to make our minds up about anything at all regarding this.

I don't think its a case of not making our minds up as I think it would be fairly difficult to remain neutral when a young girl is missing and presumed dead because her parents couldn't be bothered to look after her properly.

well, I would never leave kids on their own, regardless of how close I was to the room they were in. But they were not my kids etc.

I think its a bit unfair to say they couldnt be bothered to look after her properly though, if she was abducted then their punishment will be the regret. If they killed her, on purpose or by mistake then the punishment will be the guilt. Eitherway, they will have this for the rest of their lives.

They left their children alone and pissed off for a night out. Their daughter is now dead. This is unfair to you? That little girl may being used as a sex slave for some sick perverts and you say this is unfair to label her parents this way?
