hief executive Lex Gold says he is confident proposals for a second tier of the SPL will be green lit.

Several Scottish Football League clubs, including Dundee, Livingston and St Johnstone, tried but failed to set up an SPL2 last year.

However, an arbitration panel is still to report its findings on the proposal.

Gold said: "I am pretty confident we will win, but that's not knowledge, that's on the basis that we believe our view on the position is right."

The Scottish Premier League chief was speaking after announcing his league's biggest television deal to date.

But he knows that some clubs in the SFL have yet to be convinced of the plan for a second tier.

MY SPORT: DEBATE
Is the SPL2 a good idea?

"It does appear some of our colleagues in the Scottish Football League appear to be less keen on it and we are not going to be forcing anything on anyone that does not want it," he added.

"The aim will be that we will have another look at that. The clubs agreed that's the way we will take it forward once we know the outcome of the arbitration panel.

"It's in the hands of a tribunal at the moment."

Is there really any need for a SPL2, Scotland will only ever have 2 teams. They have an iron like grip in the SPL1 that will NEVER be broken so why highlight this to the world by creating what can only be a mickey mouse league which gives the clubs involved a little bit more income but highlights there not going to be a Rangers and Celtic.

whats the point in an SPL2? Surely there are not enough teams in Scotland to warrant this? Or is it a quick route to europe for all the teams that dont finish in the top 2?

I could understand it in the premiership, but not in the SPL at all. Maybe more effort needs to be made in the Scottish Division 1 instead of lining the pockets of the people at the top.

Division 1 is more competitive then the spl

i say expand the league to 16 or 18 teams and get rid of this fucking split!!

or put more into the 1st division.

In england, watching the championship can be more interesting than the premiership, especially towards the end.

IMO, the spl is boring anyway. Unless you are a die hard fan of one of the clubs, nothing much seems to happen.

i see the complete opposite from you probs cause i'm a diehard fan

look outside the old firm that race for 3rd place is normally exciting especially last season when 4 teams had a shout going into teh last couple of weeks

the fight for 6th place normally goes down to teh wire aswell

and relegation will be a bitter fight next season wie accies st midden killie and ICT fighting it out

I may have been a bit harsh earlier. However you are quite right, you really need to be a die hard fan to get anything out of the SPL if you dont support Celtic or Rangers.

However, creating an SPL2 wont solve these problems, I think more work needs to be done in the Scottish Division 1 in order to keep things moving in the SPL.

combine div 1 and spl = new spl

combine div 2 and 3=new div 1

make highland leauge into a new div 2 = new div 2

bring junior leagues into line and make them div 3,4,5,6.....

so every team in scotland has a chance of getting into the cleeks of scottish football

that would make the SPL huge though, the teams in the bottom half would never make it and slip back to div 1, which by your plan would hold div 2 & 3 teams.

Why not have a UK league? Or at least merge the premiership and the SPL together?

a uk league wouldn't work imo

after a few years it would be English teams in the top flight but imagine Portsmouth against Inverness ona Wednesday night?

Will never happen m8. Rangers must play Celtic a minimum of 4 times for there to be any real interest from TV deals.

Making the SPL to big would require playing each team only twice.

is there any need? The teams in Scottish Div 1 are there because they cant make it in the SPL, some cant get there as they dont meet the requirements (stadium size etc).

I think merging the SPL and premiership would be better, would stop this old firm crap straight away (at least one of the pair would be down in the championship after a season), and would mean that clubs who work hard would go further.

Plus it would mean more places in europe for UK teams.

Yeah i think there has been talk of that but the main priority has been no mater what the old firm must play 4 times in the league. I guess if Rangers or Celtic finished outside the top 6 before the split this wouldn't happen but that's highly unlikely.

With the fixture congestion this season also would it be wise to make more fixtures? We have enough problems as it is with 12 teams playing 4 times a season.

you should get a job for the spl

think of the fans mate

they line the pockets of these players week in week out
i admit the majority of my spends goes on Motherwell stuff tops season ticket jewelery tattoo soon hopefully
i couldn't afford to go to away games down the bottom of england or wherever every week mate its just not viable

prices would rocket even more, Motherwell could no longer offer at least 1 game a season at reduced ticket prices ( last season vs Aberdeen European decider £5 entry for home and away fans)

So a team who made it to the last 16 of Champions League 2 years running and one who made it to Uefa Cup Final would be in your Championship?

Sorry but il agree to disagree with you on that.

the first to go down would be 9th 10th 11th from last seasons spl then work its way up the league lol about the 3rd season Motherwell would be in championship no finishing in the top 6 or 3rd lol

celtic and rangers would be mid table or lower for at least 2-3 years until tehy pick up their income due to increased tv money and fisnihing money etc

I guess, I didnt think of it in that way - I presume I saw it the same way the SPL sees it, in terms of money.

Either way, something needs to be done to stop the SPL being ruined. Its like the other clubs never get the chance to show themselves off, which is a great shame in my book.

For instance, last season I was please Motherwell made it through to the UEFA Cup - its a refreshing change to see a team who has played their hearts out get a bit further. But I am starting to get sick and tired of the oldfirm making it into the CL constantly, at least if the SPL and premiership were merged, we would probably have more europe slots as a result - poss 5 CL slots and 3 UEFA Cup slots.

And on the old firm in the premiership, I really do beleive at least one of them would go down in the first season. Just because they make it into the CL on a regular basis means nothing, the SPL was designed for them to do this. I think the smaller teams in the SPL may surprise people, the premiership brings the best out in teams imo.
