HI,

I'm looking at getting an external hard drive to back up all my music, dvd's and stuff like that so I'm looking to see whats considered the most reliable one??

I've been looking around and it seems so many fail in just a couple of months!!!

Any help would be great thanks..

I have a seagate and wester digital so far no issues about 1-2 years old.

I tuen them off when not in use, as I only use them for backing up PC's

Agreed. Seagate or Western Digitial and you can't go wrong. Especially the ones with the 5 year warranty

cheers guys was thinking of the western digital 500gb (passport?) for around £55 or the lacie 320 for £40..

Don't buy the Passport...Buy an Internal n buy an external case to put it in...Or buy one in a case...
Peeps have been haveing problems with the passport n one touch externals.

Anything with a Hitachi drive will last forever, my personal choice though.

just to update, I bought a 500gb western digital elements drive which came yesterday but its formatted to fat32..

I want it in ntfs so I tried to format it using windows format but after nearly 3 hours it still wanst done and the drive was hot so I canceled it..

HOw long should it take and is there any quicker way??

thanks

What percentage had it gotten up to ? 3 hours does not sound too long for a USB based drive, are you sure you are running at USB2 speeds ?

Also drives are designed to run hot, it you check the spec's say anything upto 60c is considered within spec.

it was about 85 done but it was really hot to the touch so I thought better safe than sorry but now you have mentioned it it was plugged into a 1.1 usb port as the pc is old!

I never thought of that so I guess I'll try it on my laptop and see how it goes..

thanks for the help!
