Sony Ericsson has announced the launch of a mobile phone with an 8.1-megapixel camera built in.

The C905 Cyber-shot also comes with a real camera flash and is designed to look like a digital camera rather than a phone.

Features such as image stabilisation, red-eye reduction and auto-focus face detection have been built in. It also boasts a 16x digital zoom.

Currently there is no phone on the market that includes such a powerful camera although Samsung is rumoured to be developing a camera phone with a similar-sized sensor.

"The C905 Cyber-shot has been developed to make us all better photographers. That means making it easier to take great shots and never missing that magic moment," said Sven Totté of Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson has also announced the F305, a phone designed with gamers in mind. It includes motion-sensor technology that lets you control the game by using gestures.

There are ten-pin bowling and fishing games on the handset, which also has an optional powerpack that can be kept on your keyring to give you a boost if the phone's battery goes flat.

The screen is a two-inch 176 x 220 TFT display and it has a 2-megapixel camera built in.

"Gaming is no longer something you do on your own. It's about having fun with your friends and interacting with the game. We have used motion sensor technology before in our phones and integrating it into gameplay is a natural progression," said Totté.

The phones are expected to hit the market in the final quarter of 2008. No pricing information has yet been set, though this will depend on the operator and contract you sign up to.

Web User will be attending the launch event for the new handsets in London tonight and will bring you more information, including video footage, in due course.

i wonder how good it will be as no doubt the CCD is going to be the same size or even smaller....going on current phone trend/sizes

Theres only a certain amount the pixels you can fit into a CCD before the results wont be distinguishable between say a 4 megapixel....

Like Logic_187 says, the amount of pixels means fook all if the CCD or CMOS is shit.

And anyway, does anyone really need anything more than 3.2MP?

The only people I see benefiting from more than 3.2 are professional photographers who want to publish their images in Billboard format :)

To the average user, get a grip, it's not all about the number of pixels.

its just so they can sell them average punter thinks more pixels=better but as you say no need for anything more than a really good3.2mp also who wants crappy digital zoom give me 1x or 2x optical anyday over 16x digital

here here.

megapixels are shorthand for morons being sold pap in dixons.

cmos/ccd is important. But it doesnt sell phones.

One of the best Cameras I've ever used was a 'lowly' 3.2MP built by Nikon, the images were pristine.

3.2MP + decent CCD = better than most people will ever need.

love my k810i the pictures always perfect too . wonder how long the battery gonna last with real camera flash installed ??

I love my Sony Cybershot, Carl Zeiss lens's rock

Agree with you there mate my nokia has also got the zeiss lens. Its that good i even sold my proper digital camera and just use my phone now :) .I was also watching the gadget show awhile back and most of the phones with lower pixels come out tops so just goes to show its not just about how many pixels its got.

2mp used to do me, but 3.2 megapixels does me fine now. I don't see no point in these 8mp camera phones, I would rather get a propa camera which has 10mp although as you guys rightly said pixels don't count for shit all.
