Tottenham will sign forward Giovani dos Santos from Barcelona, subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms.

The Mexico international will sign a five-year deal in a move which will cost an initial £4.7m and could rise to £8.6m depending on appearances.

Barcelona have retained the right to 20% of any fee should the 19-year-old move on from Spurs in the first two years of his spell with the club.

And they will get 10% of any fee if he is sold later in his contract.

Dos Santos first joined Barcelona in 2002 and came through the youth ranks at the Nou Camp.

He broke into the first-team under former boss Frank Rijkaard last season and made 16 starts in all competitions and came on as a substitute 22 times in the campaign.

Dos Santos also scored a hat-trick in the final league game of the season as Barca beat Murcia 5-3.

The winger, who can also play up front or behind a main striker, helped Mexico to win the World under-17 championship in Peru in 2005.

He is regarded as a promising talent but appears to have been allowed to leave by the Nou Camp oufit as they also have youngsters Lionel Messi and Bojan Krkic in their ranks.

South American football reporter Tim Vickery told BBC Sport: "He is the son of Brazil international Zizinho, but he plays for Mexico - and masterminded the 3-0 win over Brazil in the final of the 2005 World Under-17 Cup.

"He is a slight figure with a terrific burst of acceleration and he has a superb left foot."

Good signing in my opinion, especially for the money paid. Think he could be a future star.

alot of money for some1 who hasnt done much in his career, might be a waste of money

In my opinion Spurs have done a great bit of business there. I cant believe Barcelona have parted with this kid especially for under 10 mill. It would have been great to see this kid playing alongside Lionel Messi and Bojan Krkic in couple years. Stupid Barca.

He is amazing player and i hope he does well in Premier League, i just wished man united would have picked him up especially when they bought 2 youngbloods last season in Nani and Anderson.

well, spurs need something, dont they? After all they have invested heavily and seen little return (apart from that cup ;))

agree with you, but i think utd should put money towards a player established in the premiership like santa cruz, wouldve liked ashton but hes just sighned a new deal so santa cruz or berbatov would be my next choice

This guy is a good player him leaving Barca is a big surprise i personally expect him to do well i seen him last season and he has the talent no doubt!

Bloody hell, Spurs supporters must think its Christmas come early!

First Modric (class!), then the youngster Bostock (potential class!) and now this guy (class in the making!).

Ramos & Poyet dont look like they're joking for next season.

Guess they've got central defenders on their shopping list next? Coz Ledley King is great but he cant play more than a few games in a row nowadays - and they sure need a decent partner for Woodgate.

I definitely think we should pursue Santa Cruz, but hell no to Berbatov. He is just a sulking baby who does nothing than wait for the ball to come to him, sure he has a great touch but having watched hours of him this season, his work rate is atrocious. On the other hand Cruz is a team player and does his work in midfield as well as taking the majority of his chances.

In regards to Dos Santos, I think its a fantastic signing for Tottenham, hope he is able to adapt to the premiership as I think alot of people will be surprised at the talent of this kid.
