However, unfortunately it's not me :(

My dad asked me to find out the 'best' tv he can get for £1000.

He has his eye on a 50" LG Plasma but aren't plasmas being phased out and are there any running costs to owning a plasma? (such as DLP's need their bulbs replaced every so often)

He also mentioned a 50" Pioneer LCD, sorry I don't know the model.

I told him to hold off until i asked my expert mates on the tinternet which was the best :)

50 inch is better on plasma m8 lcd is strugling on anything over 40 inches

Yer but isn't plasma a dead/dying technology?

I'm sure I heard something about plasmas having to be 'recharged', is this true, if so what does it involve and how much does it cost?

AFAIK plasmas need to be charged up every 5 years but can only be charged once? thats what i have been told

my 42" LCD is quality, its 1080p and cost me £630 delivered but its been discontinued :(

I grabbed a discontinued SAGEM 50" DLP from Comet a few years ago for £999.99, it's the best HDTV picture I've ever seen - I'm not just saying that because I own one, cracking telly, What Hi-Fi magazine gave it a 5/5 rating :) The only downside is that it needs a new lamp every few years (£70).

What brand/model is your telly mate.

If your going to spend 1k then AV Forums will provide you with some essential reading mate. The general opinion is the LCD for 42" and below. And Plasma for bigger screens. Also plasma doesnt suffer from "motion Blur" which can be a problem with LCD's, But once again you get good and bad from both sides. As for a dying breed the plasma has been dropped by pioneer but panasonic are still in the buisness and imho there sets are excellent. I have a Viera 42" with the XB360 for high def content and also V+ box never had any gripes about quality from me..........But as its 1k you would be better getting as many opinions as possible so goto AVforums mate for good advice.

Also worth noting that John Lewis will give a 5 year Guarantee (instead of normal 2-3year) and match the price of ANY other high street store that you can find. There is a massive thread on this over at av forums and it is worth checking out once you have decided on which set you want.

no plasma isn't a dying technology if u want a 42" plasma then have a look at the Panasonics:
TH42PZ80B
TH42PZ85B

The above 2 are plasmas and are excellent i have just put up the 42pz85b and it is quality

Have a look on this site

Q: Does the "plasma" in plasma televisions need to be recharged or replaced over time?

A: No. The plasma gases are sealed in individual cells when they are manufactured. There is no way to recharge or replace the gases. However, plasma TVs, when used normally, will last you many, many years (up to 20 years) so you don't have to worry about the screen burning out for a long time.

There is also the factor of how far away is his main viewing position,if your sat 3m away from a 50" tv then its gonna look s*it.I prefer lcd i dont get any motion blur on mine with sports etc....

Ah the new Panasonics been looking at these myself as well as the Pioneer sets. Whats the diffrence between the TH42PX80 & TH42PZ85, are they really good sets. Nipped into comet & currys yesterday but dint like the silver bit on bottom & thought the Pioneers dint really look that good for the money. So some nice looking LG & Samsungs tho.

the x model is hd ready.... the z is full hd and have other features such as IFC better audio amongst others.... the IFC is a bit hit and miss, so ive heard.... but you can get the z80 model which doesnt have it and the sound is slightly inferior to the z85 but is considerably cheaper.

1 thing to bear in mind is that the setup for each set is not the same in those sort of places, they also show promotional videos which in short is shit.

ive seen a properly set up pioneer fed various sources and i can tell you it blows the other competition away.

i would stick with the panasonic...the lg's and samsungs arent that great for reliability

There is a Fujitsu 50" on AVforums for around your price point. Its the '58' model and probably the best plasma made in that size. If my room was ready I would have bought it by now. Check it out as many do not turn up at that price or even turn up at all.

Is "FULL HD" really needed etc or is it just a manufactorys con to get more money out of us

If it were me mate then you can't go wrong with a Panasonic Viera THPX700B cracking telly for about £900

Thanks for the replies guys.

We went window shopping today and saw some crackers, some twat in Currys told us that every HD flat screen TV costing £1000 or less is a discontinued model or a refurb!

We walked away from him as fast as we could. :)

Good news that Plasma isn't being phased out coz they definately did seem to have the better picture, also good news to hear that the don't need recharged or anything like that, so far it looks like he'll be buying a Panasonic 50" Plasma for £999 from Currys, but I'll keep my eyes open as he's not buying it until friday.
