I've just moved into a house and have been using the shower but after about ten minutes I could smell a burning smell.

I thought it best to power off the electrics to the shower and take a look. I open the shower and can see that there is water inside the box and the live cable is black and has partially melted in the shower box. Looks to me like a new shower!

Does anyone know a like for like replacement for a Triton Apline Deluxe? I was looking at the Triton Zante

Do I assume that the cabling might be wrong to the shower if it has melted? e.g. It cannot take the load?

Thanks for the comment

The house has been re-wired in the last few years.

The cabling into the shower box from the isolator switch looks fine. It is a thick cable, probably about 10-12mm thick. I think the recommended for a shower is about 6mm so it doesn't overload

The problem with the wiring lies in the shower box itself. I think the shower is leaking inside and this has caused some of the cabling to melt because of the temperature of the cabling in the box. But as I said the cable feed into the box is fine.

All depends on the wattage of the shower and the cabling, think any over shower 9kw needs 10mm cable. Most showers upto 9kw will be ok with 8mm.

another thing to look for....and it may be obvious to some but not to others is this....my neice bought a flat and me brother n law (her dad..lol) is a sparky and Gas corgi....anyway he wouldn't let her use the shower in her flat and disconnected so she couldn't. The shower it self had actually been fitted lower on the wall then the shower spray on the rising rail, which would of ment when the shower was runningit would of been running and splashing straight onto the unit....just something to bare in mind.

Safest bet is to get it checked out professionally , I wouldn't like to be the one under the shower if there is a problem as you won't be walking away from that one.

Best to be safe than sorry mate

Cheers

The box is on the right of the shower just under the height of the shower head. It is possible there could have been splashes from the shower that have caused the issue.

Luckily I've got a friend who is corgi registered, so he's gonna fit one for me. But I just wanted to find one that is like for like so it's easier for him to install.

Hopefully he'll be able to tell me if there is issues with the wiring and positioning etc.

I agree fella. I didn't want to take any risks with it. The missus wanted to carry on using it :-(
