Been looking a round for a new camera I have had my eye on a Nikon D3200 18 to 55mm lenses, just wondered if any one has one and how they get on with it, are you happy with the picture quality if throws out or is there better out there. looking at spending £400, but willing to go higher if its worth the extra cost.

Argos price is £340 but I'm sure I will find it cheaper

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

hold off as the d3300 is out and places will be clearing these
I seen one in currys the other week for £200 on clearance and was missing charger

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

You would be better buying a body and a decent lens of around 18-200. As the standard kit lens would only be good for close portraits.

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

Is this your first SLR?

Can be had body only for £250 after Nikon cashback (rebate), or £310 with the kit lens you mention. Extra cashback can be had by using your preferred cashback website.

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

I do have one- Santa kindly provided last Dec 25th! It came with standard 18-55mm lens but Santa cleverly noticed a bundle on Amazon, so the 55-300 lens appeared with it too. (Just in case I wanted a snap of a geo-stat satellite!). The 18-55 is fine for day to day snaps, the 300 really gets up close though :)
I am no photography expert. I understand the basic principles, and I have found it reasonably easy to play about with the settings for those 'unconventional' shots. I'm happy with the results, though I have nothing similar to compare it with. Oh, and it's not heavy!

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

OK I'm still in two minds which way to go here have had a look about and D3200 and D3300 both Nikon's take my fancy, the only difference I see between the 2 camera's is weight which I don't think is a big issue, has anyone on he got a D3300 and if so what's you thought's on it, would be nice to hear them before I purchase a one of these models.

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

I am also looking at getting a DSLR camera sometime soon :)

Are these really good then guys...

@Mick from what I have been reading this seems the best camera out there, looks so simple to use, but you also get option to go fully manual like the old slur models, and the deal turner brown post is excellent price.

I have one too and as @Napster says, you get the best of both worlds. Stick it on Auto, and 95% of the time you get a decent picture, but you still have the option to get creative with the settings for awkward scenes. 3200 get my vote :)
AND there's a '3200 for Dummies' book which does do well to explain some of the more obscure (to the amateur) settings.

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

Been looking at some cameras and allot of people prefer the Pentax K-500 over the d3200

Anyone know more about these and what one is better?
@little_pob lol

On paper? The K-500 ticks more boxes for me. In practice? It's not the camera, but the photographer...

I wasn't going to say this, because I'm a Pentax fanboy and I've not used the camera in question. However, my dad attempted to switch from Pentax to Nikon via the D3200. He hates it. Ignoring the obvious differences in user interface, he just doesn't like the photos it takes - says the colours are inconsistent for the same conditions and camera settings.

This next one is unfair because Nikon offer a free editing software called Capture NX 2, but Photoshop doesn't natively support Nikon's NEF RAW files, and the separate Adobe Camera RAW package for the version of NEF on the D3200 apparently only works with CS5 onwards, and he uses CS4  Where as with Pentax you can set it to DNG - which is supported by Photoshop natively.

I'm not sure how much of the above is because he's a stubborn 63 year old, but I've all but convinced him to trade it in and go for a K-5 ii... even if it's just to lower his blood pressure ;)

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

I have just took the plunge it's going to be delivered Tuesday, I will admit never used a DSLR before, but my last Nikon401 SLR was an excellent camera so time will tell.

Just take your time with it. Start in automatic everything. Find your dominant eye, and if you wear glasses, you may find it easier to take them off and use the dioptre on the view finder to correct instead.

Once you're used to the camera, then start playing with the settings. Focus would be the first thing I'd start playing with.

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

Big jump in price for the k5 ii

900 plus quid with the same kind of lenses as the deal earlier (429.99)...

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm not suggesting the K-5 ii for yourself, just my old man. Body only is £700, and he's already got a few Pentax lenses. And he should be able to get at least £200 for his Nikon.

what are you suggesting for me lol :).

I want to buy DSLR, I always wanted one and now I think is a good time to try one.

A few questions, do all lenses work on all cameras?

why would the d3200 boast 24mp but the Pentax k500 offer only 16mp but still some would suggest that the Pentax takes better pictures?

would you also need the better SD cards (quicker).

what else do I need to look out for?

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

It's not just about the megapixel rating.

This might be useful: Specifications - Nikon D3200 vs Pentax K-500 Points of interest are shutter lag, battery life, continuous shooting, image stabilisation,

Even if you don't know what all the specs mean, there is a little i that you can click on for a brief explanation of each.

Personally I'd go for the Pentax, but I'd want to see sample photos from both taken under similar conditions before giving a definitive answer that someone is going to spend money on.

The class 10 SDHC and UHS SDXC cards are only really needed if you regularly use "burst fire" (continuous shooting).

Other things to bare in mind are the price of lenses and ancillaries such as spare batteries, remote release, flashguns etc.

Re: Nikon D3200 DSLR advise

Just bought one last month with the kits lens for the mrs on the recommendation of a couple of people who are heavily into their photography. Its a very capable camera, automated as much as you want for beginners and manual control for those wanting more control. You need to look closely to notice difference in picture quality between this and cannon 600d which are in the same price range.

The supplied kit lens is good enough to get you going. Good enough that you can focus on using your creativity. When using RAW mode, you can digitally zoom in a fair amount, obviously dependant on output median. Vs d3300, there are a few differences detailed here,

Nikon D3200 vs D3300 - Our Analysis

One last thing, if you are planning on getting cash back then just check with the place you are buying from. Some of the cheaper places online are grey imports and don't qualify for the cash back offer.
