come on then you David baileys out there im looking at getting into this photography lark and have been looking at the canon 300d and 400d models. Now for a complete novice what would you suggest, is the 300 ok or the 400 a bit too advanced and a bit pricier for an amateur or can you recommend anything else please give names, makes, and models and any info cheers.

So would you say that going for the 300d would be a good move at entry level, also the 10d what other features over the 300d has it got? thanks for your response LP.

ISO3200 is the main advantage as the 300D is only ISO1600 with the official firmware. Others are discussed in this blog: The Canon EOS Digital Rebel (300D) Firmware Hack (the 300D is known as the Rebel in the US).

My DSLR is actually a Samsung as I already had a few K, KA and KAF (i.e. Pentax) lenses, but my mate has the 300D with the 10D hack and gets good shots out of it.

This is a stitched panorama (using huggin) taken using the stock lens on his 300d: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd138/ck666uk/liverpool/doc.jpg image © 2009 Robert Laws

Great photo there, thanks for info, what do you think is a good price for 300d in tiptop condition? and any links or pointers, once again cheers little pob.

Yes thats what i was thinking round the 150 mark, ok thanks for info.

What would be your top bid on this item then mate, just as a rough guideline cheers.

Baring in mind the scratch on the 18-55mm lens probably no more than £200. The sensor needing a clean isn't going to be a problem, Jessops et al can sort that if you don't fancy doing it yourself.

Went for 250 oh well i know what im after now and sort of price range thanks for info LP.

I have been using the Digital Rebel with the 'updated' firmware for about 3 years now (20,000+ pictures) with great results. The prints it produces are as good or better than most newer 10+ MP cameras out at the moment. Keep it clean, use a tripod & carry a few different lens's & you will be amazed at the results.

Sadly though, only the new Canon DSLR's offer a 1080p short movie option

Have fun !

Well i finally got my camera 9 months later, i am really looking forward to getting to grips with this camera and taking some great snaps.

A basic filter kit you might want to put together:
  • Circular polariser
  • Neutral density 2 and 4 (aka ND2 and ND4)
  • Screw on skylight or UV filter that is permanently attached to your lens.
