In what is turning out to be a classic example of viral marketing, Korean manufacturer Samsung has started giving out free Galaxy S smartphones to existing iPhone 4 users who have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction on Twitter.

Samsungukmobile succeeded in growing its number of followers from less than 100 to more than 2800 in around 48 hours by using this marketing stunt and although it sounds suspiciously like a scam, the whole episode as been confirmed as being genuine.

Samsung, it seems, is focusing its attention on Apple's known issue with unstable reception and dropping calls, otherwise known as Antennagate.

Social networking website Facebook has also been the target of the marketing team from Samsung mobile and many have noted that the handsets have been offered to a select number users whom the Guardian calls "cherry-picked bunch of digital influencers".

Samsung issued a press statement saying that "We decided to contact a cross section of individuals to offer them a free Samsung Galaxy S as a replacement, as we're confident that once people have the phone in their hands, they'll see how impressive it is for themselves."

Hopefully, the whole exercise won't come back to bite them back if there's any backlash.

Samsung Galaxy S offered to disgruntled iPhone 4 tweeters

It seems like Nokia isn’t the only mobile company to positively take advantage of Apple over the high profile antenna and reception issues the iPhone 4 has suffered from.

At the end of June, Nokia ran a spoof piece on its blog entitled “How do you hold your Nokia”, exploring all the different grips that could be successfully used with its phones as “features”.

And now Samsung is getting a few swift kicks in while Apple’s down, with an advert which Mashable spotted that takes the mickey out of Apple’s free bumper-clad super smartphone.

It’s more subtle than Nokia’s effort, though, and simply consists of a picture of the company’s new top-end smartphone, the Galaxy S, with the word “hello” above it. Except the l’s in hello are made up of signal bars in a sly dig at Apple’s woes of late.

Not only this, but apparently Samsung is also giving away some Galaxy S smartphones to a few unhappy iPhone 4 users who are experiencing reception problems.

The Frontline reports that Samsung has a Twitter account which has been sending out a few free phones over the last couple of days.

User joseespinosa received the message: “Hi Jose, a Galaxy S replacement for your iPhone 4 has been sent. Hope you like it. It’s been receiving a great reception ;-)!”

Fourteen hours ago, the account tweeted: “Yes, we’re giving away Galaxy S’. We’re proud of it so wanted to get it into some people’s hands to spread the word. Only a few left!”

So there you have it. If you get in there quickly with your iPhone 4 sob story this morning, you might still be able to get one.

Good on them

I hate companies who rest on their laurels just because they are a "Name".

Sod them, they have adopted a blinkered approach to product development/improvement, due to the strength of their fanbase who will queue for day's on end just to get V*.*+1 of their latest offering.

It's the same all over, even guitar manufacturers will rip their public off by changing the hardware colour & adding a few decals to a jaded old guitar shape in the hope that they will ensnare a whole new batch of wannabes.

(this makes perfect sense to me now, gawd knows what it'll look like when I sober up).
