Hi need a little advise please

I'm taking my old decking up and replacing it, my question is should I pilot drill the decking before I put screws in or just screw through which is correct way, I have got the correct decking screws (green)

cheers

Drill a pilot theres less chance of splitting the wood

Only if you are using hardwood, you don’t normally need to pilot drill softwood unless the screw is at the end of the board where it may split

A trick I used to use many years ago was to hit the pointed end of the screw just once with the hammer

That way the screw does not split the board so easily

Decking and decking screws will happily drive straight in without pilot holes Your screws will be well away from the edge so cant see you having an issue with splitting mate. Ive fitted a few decks and never pilot drilled

Well that's the old decking up and I'm now fecked, it will have to wait before I put new down

I did ask my 20 and 24 year old sons but all I got was they will have to get up early lazy barstools :) kids don't know what work is these days

If you got the right screws it usually says 'designed not to split timber' or similar on the box. If you have to pilot a combined drill and countersink bit is about £3 and quick.

Well all old decking is up just need some nice weather to start cutting and putting down

Good job, Napster! My decking needs doing as well (rotting and busted boards all over the place). Did you treat the boards before you put them down? Ours are in about 15 years and I kinda remember the guy who did it painting the ends with something?

Thanks
