Dewalt cordless drill cost me £100 two years ago and one of the batteries is stuffed. The other is well on the way.

Batteries are £40 EACH! ffs

May as well just buy a new Li-Ion drill.

Erm, maybe I should have put this in the Rant Room....

....soz :(

BTW - NiCad is a bad option for cordless!

Got one of those £100 (on offer) Hitachi li-ion ones from scewfix a couple of years ago, still going strong pal it's superb. 2 batteries n stuff.

Bought the new Dewalt XR series Drill and Impacter a little while ago, bought them naked but the 4.0ah li-ion batteries for them were only £55 - you checked ebay ?

I have a DeWalt 18V SDS which has been severely punished over the past 7 or 8 years. Yes, it has gone through an average of one battery per year over that time, and I can confirm, the original NiCads were the worst of the lot.
I have installed in excess of 1000 (big) satellite dishes using this drill, and only now are the bearings starting to complain a little.
I have been using 3.0AH Chinese batteries (NiMH) from the 'well-known auction site', they're normally around £40 each. But they do well considering the conditions- normally charging in the car in hot conditions, and used until the last drop of current has been drained, to save a trip down 4 flights of stairs to get the spare!
Would I buy another? YES! In a minute!!

(PS I have NO shares or other financial interest in DeWalt!!)

The problem with ni-cads is if you don't let them completely discharge between charges the are useless after a short while.

i use an hitachi 24v and recently got 2 2.2ah ni-mh batteries for £96 delivered. £40 isnt that bad as ive seen bosch 3.0 ah 24v for £150,regards mdt

That's right Ian they are not good for tools/Drills etc. Good thing about the Dewalt XR Li-Ion batteries is they have no memory effect and virtually no self-discharge, charge them as much as you want :)

Choices seem to have narrowed down to:

1 - direct replacements £28 each at Amazon but the problem recurs in about 2 years
2 - de-memorise the existing batteries but it's a temporary fix
3 - cough for a Li-Ion drill such as Makita at £100

De-memorise per Youtube:

Ni-CD Battery fix for free - YouTube

Use two good batteries in series to flash the duffer with 36v to burn away the memory 'fingers'. Once the duffer shows similar to 18v leave it to cool down then recharge.

All my cordless tools are 18v cordless dewalt nicad , I probably have 5-6 of those drills @Him Her in all different states lol

Mine last about 6 months as the lads could not give a fook lol about running the batts down, I buy the £100 quid drill 2-4 times a year.

I want to get the lithium but they are not compatible... So I just except it lol.

But I have so many dewalt 18v tools I need 3 site safes for them all.

I've started to renew my battery tools and just went for Dewalt because I like the new XR stuff, so far I have

You'll get that Lancaster restored one of these days.

There are some Lancasters left to restore? Anyway, I'm 'flashing' the battery with 36v and it's starting to recover. Lots of sparks and Mrs M is hiding under the stairs in case there's an explosion - no worries, we're insured ;)
