Have 2 fluorescent lights in kitchen connected to a 2 gang switch. Recently one of the lights, when switched off sparks so much from the switch it sometimes trips the breaker. The other light is fine. Checked the wiring and seemed ok so changed the switch. Tested it a few times and seemed ok but when I turned lights off last night there was a big spark from the switch again. Any ideas please?

A loose cable on the fitting side of things or one of the ballists on its way out either could cause overload current. Check wiring to/inside fitting and each fitting on its own.

make sure you have not trapped or nipped one of the wires behind the light switch it only has to touch one of the switch screws and it will spark or trip out on you.

Will recheck wiring at both ends but doubt it's at the switch end as too much of a coincidence I'm getting same problem with the same light with a new switch. If the wirings fine then I guess a new light fitting would be cheaper and easier option than changing ballast?

are the live and neutral the right way round? not sure that would cause a spark on its own but if the neutral wire was bared back a bit more and too close to the earth you never know?
