Electricans beware....an new Reg Part P

mFI kitchen fittter

Just rewired my friends sons house .
he brought a kitchen from MFI .
Used their fitters 2 nice indian chaps installed the kitchen fine but wanted to connect up the kitchen which was pre wired by myself.
Tried to tell me how competent ,they were as they had Part P.

Then proceeded to tell me thay had connected up the hood already.
I asked them if they had used a 13a outlet or a fused spur ?,
"No we have done it like we always do with a 15amp connector"
No way to isolate locally to clean etc.:ASSFLASH:

So there's your Part P out the window.
And they insist they have it,
Great Goverment Legislation but how can you check it.

Same a the guy who set himself up after watching too much CSI.

They will have left paperwork (Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate ) with their relevant bodies information, phone the bodies and say your not happy.

I would expect a Electrical Installation Certificate for a Kitchen, if they never left either than call mfi and ask them why not as it is a legal requirement

741-01-01
upon completion of the verification of a new installation or changes to an existing installation, an electrical installation certificate, based on the model given in apendix , shall be provided. such documentation shall include details of the extent of the installation covered by the certificate, together with a record of the inspection and testing results.

741-01-03
where minor electrical installation work does not include the provision of a new circuit, a minor electrical installation works certificate, based on the model given in appendix 6, shall be provided for each circuit altered or extended.

taken from bs7671 incorporating ammendments
no 1 : 2002 and no 2 : 2004
bs 7671 is the 16th edition and is what all electricians must work to.

The only upside to this is that many of IEE members who approved this lunacy (they write the guidelines) aren't able to do any electrical work themselves anymore or appear as expert witnesses it this field :)

I wonder how the cowboys will get round this then.

I here they have been hoarding the old type cable, so they can wire up a house
or whatever and know one knows the date it was done.

well everything will change again next year cause the 17th is out, already advertising the new testers and what not.

the fun of 17th and part P

well all you guys who have your Part P, need to be aware of the new 17th edition, this requires that ALL circuits need to be protected by an RCD. YES ALL CIRCUITS this does include lighting, you can still use RCBO's if you wish but the cost of your boards will go through the roof (£300 to £350) for a fully loaded RCBO board. you can always get 1 of the new Split Split loaded boards. O what fun us electrians will have now, 17th comes into full force on July 1st 2008, if you aint got 17th you cant work. The question being asked atm does the Part P under 16th mean you can do anything at all from July 1st with your PART P or is it worthless. I think you should all get conformation from your regulatory body as to there standing on this, personally I dont care I have my 17th.

NICEIC certs

most of my guys are G39 trained but I only have a couple with 16th edition which means I now need to get another firm in to complete the NICEIC earth loop tests £ 65 a time just to sign of what my guys used to be able to do, its madness, saying that if there are any leckies in the Midlands who can run around and test these for cheaper drop me a line on here. Cheers, oh its mainly real time shelter displays for the transport network that I do that and traffic light priority.

I thought that Niceic accredited electricians were not allowed to test and issue complation certificates for another companies work, unless they were involved in the installation.
You may find that they can only issue you with a periodic inspection certificate.

Curly is correct

Nobody can sign off work for anybody else really, the company issusing the cert has to be the company carring out the work. Look towards ELESCA rather that NIC. You can register you company for around £400 that way anybody who works for you can installl and test as long as somebody in the company has a 2391, just give that person a superviors positing. I have also checked with somebody about the Part P and the conflicts it may add to the issue. You guys who install to 16th will be commting an offence as of 01/07/08 if the circuit is NOT protected by a RCD. So even putting a fused spur onto a old board without a RCD on it will be breaking the law.

So the big Question is WHEN WILL THERE BE A 17th EDITION upgrade for Part P. Answer so far is there wont be, you will have to retest on the NEW 17th Part P.

I will check and advise if they do add an update option, but from the people I chat to in the training side of things, its not on the cards at all.

do they really think i am going to get another spark in to do my own job? the answer is, am i fook. i will do all my own rewire in my new house and they wont no who has done it, i will get my company to test it and all will be well. everyone in this country is out for making money, the part p is crazy, i wired 6 flats for some guy and he had part p and he was tryin to tell me how to wire the flats. in the end i snapped, told him where to go and he soon shut up when i mentioned some termonology. he wanted me to do the test if he told me how to do it. i dont have 2391 so i told him to shove it for tryin to tell me how to wire.

I have my 2391 but not part p as I don't work on domestic properties.
I'm waiting for my employer to send me on the 17th edition course, but no signs yet.
I originally trained to the 15th edition and had to go to Blackburn to do the 16th edition course.
I had a flick through some notes on the 17th and apparently you can now install a socket in a bathroom.....................as long as it's 30M away from a fixed bath or shower! Fookin big bathroom lol

lol, i will just add a 40m extension for my en-suite bathroom. i have my 16th, dunno when ill do the 17th. i heard they are going to scrap the part p now. just another money making scheme.

The 1st amendment to the 17th is already being written, the problem is that if you have a bulb go, it takes out the RCD wich then takes out everything else in the house lol, so thats why they want you to use either RCBO's or Split Split boards where you put the upstairs lights with the downstairs sockets and the downstairs lights with the upstairs sockets. Showers have to be on RCD. From a self emplyed sparks point of view its all good news to me, problem comes however when somebody asks for an extra socket on an old style board without RCD, YOU CANT LEGALLY DO IT lol, thank **** ive still got 5 rolls of red and black lol
