Hi



Need to wire a electric cooker/Halogen Hob and fully aware of part p etc. Worked FLC at 36A.

Would 6mm2 be ok for a less than 10m run ? Or should i use 10mm2 ??

Plan on 45 A mcb type b and 45A CCU.

I would prefer the cooker/hob to be on the non RCD side due to earth leakage but does that mean i can not have a CCU with a socket (was going to use for extractor)

Anyone clarify.... Again fully aware of regs etc, not doing job myself but can get MK parts from a mate for free :proud:

you will get away with 6 mm if you are protecting it with a 32 A mcb.

you will not be able to have a ccu with a skt if not protected m8.

the 36 A total you have stipulated may vary due to different voltages m8, so the 32 would be enough. plus you are never goin to have everything running at the same time.

If you can get the cable for free then may aswell get the 10 mm.

I have posted thias elsewhere and some are saying it has to be on RCD side of board regardless of socket ?

It is no problem if i do not have a socket one as i can easily feed from ring main/fused spur.

Just need clarification on cooker/hob....

If you are installing a cooker circuit from new, then you need to choose a CCU. These are available with or without a socket outlet, it is preferable to get one that does not contain a socket outlet as electric cookers (ovens especially) are notorious for earth leakage. Ideally a cooker / oven should be connected to the non RCD protected side of the consumer unit or else nuisance tripping can occur. If you do get one with a socket outlet then the regs state the cooker must be wired to the RCD protected side of the consumer unit!

Ratings for cables enclosed in an insulated wall: Method 1

6.00mm - 32amp

10.00mm - 43amp


Ratings for cables which are clipped direct: Method 2
6.00mm - 46amp

10.00mm - 63amp

What model is your proposed cooker?

the 17th edition wiring regulations state that if the cable is to be embeded in the wall less than 50mm regardless of socket outlet then it has to be rcd protected( i am a registered niceic electrician )and if the cable is just burried in plaster and not go insulation on all sides then 6mm will be fine

Cheers. Will feed it from it's own RCBO then incase of trips.

and if there is metal sheathing, that has to be earthed.
