We've had a bad smell in the kitchen for about a month now.
Dynorod have been out 3 times and claimed it was due to blocked U bends. They cleaned these but the smell continued.

On Saturday I lifted the flooring in the kitchen and opened a hatch.
The concrete base under the floor was covered in about 1 inch of stinking kitchen waste water which had been pouring from a broken T-piece.

Basically everything from the sink, washing machine and dishwasher has been pouring out under the floor.

Yesterday I got a wet vac and got out all the old waste water that I could but it's still very damp and although not as bad as it was still smells pretty awfull.

Does anybody know how I go about getting rid of the smell?
Will it dry out on it's own or should I be thinking about specialist help (ie Rainbow or the likes)??

Scrubber dubber those floors with bleach until your hands bleed, it's the cheapest way. You also get a chemical cleaner for removing mortar stains off brickwork, it's quiet good and only costs a couple of quid for a gallon.

it's not the floors Munkey. It's under the floor on the concrete base of the house.

The dynorod guy suggested putting lime down but I'd be wary of that in case anyone had to go back down there.

How big is the gap between your floorboards and the concrete base, is there enough room to crawl in?

About 16 inches .... don't really fancy going down there though :(

was thinking about some sort of disinfectant powder/garnules that could be scattered into the void via the hatch?

I would just put up with the smell and let it seep and evaporate away.

Anything you put down there isn't getting rid of it, its just masking it.

Once it dries out the smell will go quite quickly.

It's not enough room to crawl around in so you've gotten off lightly.

Get some pro advice in case it's cheap to resolve. Personally I'd be washing it down with bleach and letting it get plenty of air, if you can get the smell out in a day or two you've done an excellent job.

Make sure you have plenty of air bricks providing ventilation underneath your suspended floor.

Usually we find that the smell never comes from where people say it's coming from, so check the armpit and crotch area before you part with your cash.

When I had a leak in the cellar of an old business premises I chucked shit loads of jeyes fluid down, then threw jeyes granules on it once every few months.

Now I've moved and it's the landlords problem!

Bicarbinate of soda is good at neutralising smells.

However, before liberally throwing down an industrial vat of the stuff, mix small amounts of little bicarb and any cleaning fluid you use/have used outside. The reaction of bicarb with acid is fun, but you don't want it in your eyes...

Lime is defo the best mate but you need to think of the future as it can cause horrific burns just in case someone goes under the floor, Janitol is one of the best things on the market you can get it from ARCO.

Good luck with the cleanup.

Had the same thing a few years back m8
The smell went when i closed the leak , the smell was mainly from the open drain though and once that was repaired things improved rapidly.
I just dried it out best i could and put a bit of disinfectant down.
Like i said tho make sure the drain is sealed up properly as smells are bad from open drain.
The good thing about a kitchen leak is it is mostly water with detergent ie dishwater washmachine water that is flooding in

Cant your insurance cover it they will call in the cleaners etc???

yes m8, the buildings insurance does cover it but I don't really want to pay the £150 excess for Rainbow to come out and throw a fivers worth of lime on it.

Hi all the above is ok but!
Do you know any one which works in a mechanical engineering company?
When we have a spillage of collant fluids we use a form of sand which drye the concret floor very whichly and stop the smell also.
If you do not have access to this go to mchine mart shop and I think they can help you.
Also when we had work donne in our house the kids cats manege to move some radietor pipes under the floor...don't ask... any how what I did...I put an old electric fan heater (rectangular shape about 12 *8* 4 high and in mater of 3 hours the concret was damp turne off over night, end next day completly dryup this is some help
