hi guys, just finishing off the hallway and wanted a bit of advice. The top of the banisters are woodstained whereas the bottoms bits (technical term!) are gloss painted. Do I just need to sand the top of the banisters and get rid of the spots of paint that have appeared on them and then apply new woodstain?

if you have small spots of paint then sand but be careful you don't sand too much off the banister.

for bigger patches of paint use nitromoss from b&q to remove paint....wear gloves+goggles (if u wear glasses use an old pair cos that stuff is so strong the paint of your glasses will even come off).

use brush to apply nitromoss and wirewool (not too rough and not too fine) to rub the paint off (use scrapper where necessary but be gentle not to damage wood).

once paint is off use very fine wire wool to smooth the wood, finally wash with turp's then varnish/woodstain.

Me and the Mrs are strippping...................... Our staircase at the mo, found the paint stripper, nitormos thingy, crap. Heat gun and scrapper worked a load better. Now just need a quick rub over with sandpaper and bobs your aunts dogs bollocks or sommit.

best advice for any body doing any decorating is let someone else do it while you go for a :drink:

If its emulsion paint it will wash off with soapy water
