hello peeps i want a burglar alarm asap. To keep costs down i want to install myself :) shouldnt be to hard lol was thinking of going for a hardwired one i dont mind running cables the only thing i wont toutch is the electrics :) i hear the wireless ones are ok but something telling me a wired one better ? so if anyone has info on installing a wired one or any good deals out there for a system many many thx

run it all your self and get a sparky to just hook it up to the mains. as he,ll only be hooking it to the mains it shouldnt be too much and you,ll know its safe.

wouldnt bother with wireless or battery ones, get a mains one for sure, they all have back up batteries in them incase the leccy goes off.

yes that was my thoughts keep it safe just need to know what a good system to go for ? theres to many scumbags about these days :( just will give me a bit of piece of mind :)

I have a wireless auto dialling alarm that was a breeze to install.

if yo just want a simple one then that would do. The wired ones I looked just replaced the battery pack for a PSU

If you wire it all up I'll talk you through how to connect it.
I can get some drawings done in the meantime m8.
Get yourself 100M of 6 core alarm cable (not telephone cable) and run 1 cable from the alarm unit to each device ie PIR, door contact and the siren etc.
Probably end up with loads of cables coming out of the box lol

I prefer the Optima Accenta range which can be used with a remote keypad

curly - do you know about alarms?

I put my wireless one in over xmas - if you were going to recomend a wired one which one would you go for?

A couple of weeks ago partner lost some identification then we rcd a suspicious call at 4 in the morning.

Next day I went down to B&Q to check alarm systems out. I bought B&Q's own which is similar to one below and it is £50 cheaper (you must only be able to get instore).

Took me under 1 hr to install (hardest part was leaning out the window to attach the siren).

It has 2 door sensors, 2 passive sensors, 2 key fobs, siren and control panel, works a treat!

I had 2 x burglar alarms fitted - both cost in the region of £500/£600 fitted. However with both units different makes - kept getting phone calls to say alarm going off - so went one better ripped them out & bought two dobes for £800 - now no phone calls & also no cold callers etc:

Costs a lot to maintain - but at least we go out & do not have to worry & sleep safely!

two dobermans?

How do they stop cold callers?

We just open the door & watch - they dont call again for sure

By accident of course that we open the door - word soon spreads round

strange, I was always under the impression that cold calling was done over the phone.

But if you have trouble with people like that I suppose its a reasonable way of dealing with it.

One of the benefits of living somewhere hidden away means I dont get any of that :)

Two Doberman. Can they monitor the fire sensors too? LOL

We ended up getting a monitored setup. No bells at all. The monitoring company will only phone the police if they get a "confirmed activation". Also got fire detectors installed and the same applies.

The police will not attend any alarm unless it is monitored or the neighbours have actually seen a break in in progress.

We get 10% discount off of the house insurance.

You can have your alarm monitored from anywhere from £50 - £100 a year (it will need cleaning etc by an engineer 3 times a year)

that sounds like a better idea. Dobermans cant pick up the phone and call the police either eh?

Quite interested in getting a flood alarm fitted.

yes still want to get the wired alarm :) dont really want to get no dogs lol thinking of spending 150 to 200 mybe abit more and no dog food :)

@ Karym6 yes m8, I'm a spark by trade and have fitted many alarms, although I trained in industrial installation work.
The panel I have at home is an Accenta 8 which has 8 zones and zone 8 can be programmed as a 24hr fire zone.
It also has 3 outputs for connecting to an autodialler, which I've done too.

It would be easy to connect as a flood alarm by putting a normally closed float switch in a celler or under floorboards and connecting to any 24hr circuit in the panel.
If it was wired to the anti tamper circuit for instance, a flood would sound the internal sounder and not all the sirens.

Mine calls my mobile when activated. If it doesn't get a response from me (by pressing 8) it tries again then dials the wife and finally the father in law.

In my experiance a decent alarm with led's flashing on the bell box etc encourages scrotes to attack someone elses property instead.

cheers Curly.

makes sense to me :)

is the equipment easy to install? I would imagine I would need an electrician to d some of this work?

Texecom (www.texe.com) make fantastic alarms and they are reasonably priced and pretty easy to install.

do not know anything about wireless never installed one but texecoms wired panels are a breeze to operate aswell ;)

one thing i forgot to say is that i have 4 codes on my home alarm

first is for normal all areas armed

second is for night time all windows and doors (plus living room and dinning room pirs (no one needs to be in them rooms))

third and most important is a silent duress code that if you had a gun or knife held to your face and you was made to unset your code you could enter this code and it would disarm the system like normal but also call whoever was your emergancy call and they could call police.

4th is normal duress code that would activate the bells if an intruder was say in the garden or something ???

i would always recommend number 3 i have never been in an experience of this but if i did i would really be glad i could use that code

we have a texecom veritas 8 alarm panel, its been in 5 years and had 2 false alarms in that time......i didn't fit as we had it fitted 2 days after we moved in and i was a bit busy doing other stuff :) I have replaced 1 pir and the backup battery.

i installed alarm in our previous house its not difficult just time consuming if u want to conceal all the cables under the floors etc, my only advice would be one take your time and two label up every cable at the panel it will save u loads of time when u come to connect up.
