Hi Peepz
I have bought a new 240GB SSD to speed up my desktop. I want to only move the OS and programs onto the new SSD & keep all the other cr@p on HDD like pictures, videos, music & documents.
Is there any software I can download or can someone talk me through how to do this without loading a fresh install

thanks
Ice

I would do a fresh install personally but I think there's a cloning software available that creates an copy. I can't remember what its called Norton Ghost? Something like that. Just Google it you will find loads of tutorials on how to do it on YouTube

thanks bally, I check it out when I get home, ideally I want to move the OS from the HDD to the SSD without the hassle of fresh install. I try youtube to see if any good tutorials. 240gb should be enough for OS & programs, what you think?
thanks

I'm still running my original 60gb SSD mate so should be fine

Some SSDs come with a free, full copy of Acronis True Image Home. Check the box for a slip of paper with the URL and key.

If using free cloning software, make sure you check what limitations are in place before you go through the effort of downloading. Trial versions of commercial software will often only clone small partition sizes, e.g. 4GB.

If grabbing a copy from torrents etc, make sure you scan the download for viruses, malware, ransomware etc.

I found Gparted was a great way to clone a whole partion to another drive. Its free and you can use it for other stuff too.

has these tools

Clonezilla, doClone, FSArchiver, G4L, g4u, Partimage, Partclone.

GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD

Will Gparted copy ova everything or can i just copy over the os and programs and delete them from the hdd?

I would still say probably quicker to do new install and just copy over your data or put your old drive in a USB caddy.

Hi Guyz

Thought I would report back how I got on.
Firstly, tried to find a good free software to migrate my OS over to the SSD.
I found EaseUS, firstly I had to move all my documents, pictures, videos & music onto a external drive so I could get my HDD size small enough to migrate over onto the SSD.
Once I did that I tried to migrate over but kept getting errors e.g. fize size not big enough went it was a lot smaller than my SSD. Finally I gave up on that software.
I found Minitool Partition Wizard & honestly I wish I found it earlier. So simple, you partitions drives, merge partions, expand partitions etc. Also you can migrate OS to HDD/SSD in a few clicks.
I am now running my SSD & moved HDD as storage. You have to log into Bios & set the SSD as the first drive to boot up. PC boots up really fast & all working good so far.

thanks
Ice

Sorry i never got back to you, Gparted is a little bit like Minitool partition.

But hey you finally got it sorted :)

glad it worked out for ya - Acronis is awesome for imaging a mechanical drive to an SSD. But yeah you can't image a larger drive to a smaller SSD. If you need to re-partition then EaseUS is the way to go. Why not buy a larger SSD to avoid re-partitioning? Eventually you may need a larger SSD anyways.
