Could anyone advise please. A friend of mine has sly tv, phone, broadband. the problem is the broadband. The router is in the hall and the slybox is in the living room.Because of this sly have sent a little catch up/on demand box to work this part of the system. It is constantly going off or really slow downloading a program to watch. After being on the phone for an hour they got it running in a fashion but what they did say was that her internet was the quickest she could have (sly deal free internet) and that is 9.8 mbs going through the old BT lines. She doesn't want fibre optic because she doesn't have a computer it is purely for on demand/ catch up. Would it be quicker with an ethernet cable? sly say no. can this internet be speeded up in any way at all because it is nothing but trouble at the moment and Sly are getting good money for this.

Thank you

get on phone to them tell them you keep having issues dropouts etc i had same issues told me some crappy thing like too many users on same line they did something their end now have faster broadband no issues @ all

So they can speed it up then?. Are sly giving her a load of crap because it's free m8?.

i have same issues with sly internet they said me i could go fibre an they told me i have pay 30 change over i have not got much help of sly

on free here also mate think to be honest all providers can boost it if need be i only made one call they looked at it & said would change @ their end not sure what they did but its sorted cant complain about it still BT crap copper used here

The thing is once this fault was very and I mean very slightly rectified Sly gave the old mates chat up lines, you know the sort, holidays, family all this in my friends time then came the killer punch. We can do you a great offer on your Sly contract while you are on the phone now?. Of course the fault then went flying over her head and she has now signed up for another 12 Months with these coonts. :Angryfire

Best thing to do in these circumstances is threaten to cancel $ly altogether- they're desperate to hold onto customers, so this is the most likely (though not guaranteed) way to make them listen.
You could always try running a temporary ethernet cable to see if it will help, but as $ly say it is unlikely, unless there is a lot of interference in the immediate area.

@miggy, yes it will be better using an ethernet cable.

Few other things to question, is the router plugged into the master socket? Are all extensions disconnected?

9.8Mbps is the maximum you can get, but to be honest unless you're sitting on top of the exchange, you will never achieve those speeds. I used to live 120ms from the exchange, and I could only get 7Mbps. Even direct at the exchange on the MDF I could only get 7.8Mbps.

Disconnect the extensions, and plug directly into master socket and see what kinds of speeds are achieved then. You may also have star wiring which is useless for broadband.

Thanks Jan I will give that a try with the cable when I am next down there. nothing else is plugged into the router only the phone line and the mains and the phone line is disconnected to the Sly box. She has no laptop, tablets ect it is purely for catch up only now that her Sons have left home.

@miggy check the socket being used. I would guess that there are extensions hanging off it. Remove the front plate and plug the filter and router directly in there and see if that makes things better :)

I had great speeds on VM then it dropped quickly and I tried everything but no solution. When I got VM to look at it - the box outside was at fault.

A friend of mine was posse led when his Wifi speed suddenly dropped dramatically, turned out it was the next door neighbours nanny monitor was interfering with the signal. Plug it in with the Ethernet cable and see if it's faster,
