when using a rs232 is it better to use a tower system with the connection built in or are these usb to rs232 serial adaptors for laptops any good

well usb to serial connections do work.

at work i use one from my netbook to cisco routers blue console cable however i do have a spare because they are a bit unreliable tbh.

if you have a pc with a serial port i would use that first before using a usb to serial adaptor.

it doesn't have to be a tower any small form factor, desktop or tower from pre 5 years ago will have serial port or ports.

The vast majority of legacy ports have disappeared. PS/2 is about all you'll find.

These days, to have an RS232 on a tower, you're looking at adding in a PCI card or USB header to serial adapter.

I find that serials to USB work fine on my laptop, even on my little dell mini that i keep in my van (just incase)...

Regards
Mick

the 'adapters' may need software to work correctly (mine came with a disc..)
