Alienware Gaming Desktops

I was wanting to get a new computer for myself and have been looking around for quite some time. I've heard 'ultrabooks' are a good portable laptop for personal use but i want to use my computer for gaming, watching movies, downloading, etc... and for memory, i decided I wanted a desktop computer. Ran across the alienware desktop computer (in the link) but heard that alienware is way overpriced for their computers. Is there truth to that or is it just someone's negative opinion?

Erm there are 2 desktops in that link do I'm not sure which one you mean but at the end of the day I would say that generally any pre built desktop is overpriced , with alien you get a cool case and a badge and it will be generally optimised for gaming but there is nothing to stop you building this yourself ,

I would price up every part of whatever machine you want and compare that way

You can often customise a Dell XPS rig for cheaper (I mention Dell as they own the Alienware brand).

I'd go with bn3's suggestion and build your own. Taking the specs of the Aurora: Windows 8, i7 3820, 1.5Gb Nvidia GTX 660, 8GB RAM, 1TB 7200RPM HDD, 24x DVD-RW, 875W PSU, mouse and keyboard. The UK retail price is £1098.99.

This as close to like-for-like as I can get it: Lists | Ebuyer.com - £70 less and a GPU with more RAM.
And this is what I would buy with a £1.1k budget: Lists | Ebuyer.com - note the lack of OS in the basket ;)

If you don't want to build it yourself, have a look at Scan's 3XS systems, Overclockers UK's OcUK Tech Labs builds and Aria's Gladiator Gaming Range.

I would go with a dell had mine for years never had a problem with I watch and do unload tons of movies and games not over price

Do they still modify connections of things on standard dells ?

PCI, PCI-e, SATA and USB headers are standard. Not sure on the 24pin PSU connection, but the mount for the CPU fan do tend to be custom/proprietary (they use standard CPUs though).

yer thanks m8 i did a bit of googeling after i posted , looks like modern ones all have standard 24 pins now aswell as front wiering bur dont quote me on that

For the price alienware sells them your just paying for there name. I have an alienware and a ASUS laptop and I prefer the ASUS one. It performs better then the alienware.

Personally, I would never touch a Dell. Building it yourself or getting a friend to put it together for you is definitely much cheaper. If you had the money to spend and wanted pre-built, the Digital Storm pcs look really nice especially the Aventum (although now you're really stepping into overpriced territory).
