Ok can anyone help or give me some advice on this lads, Im using Astraweb but I cant activated the SSL encryption, all I get is a socket connection error.

Now Ive clicked the SSL box and changed the port number to 443 and 563 and neither of them work. I went to astrawebs website and got the information below I pasted it so you can clearly see I have tried the right ports.

So why wont it connect I obviously want to use the SSL option any help lads ?

THIS IS WHAT I GOT OF THE ASTRA WEB SITE.

We have updated our server connection settings to make things more consistent, and in particular, to allow some strict checking news reader clients* to work.
The old settings will eventually be phased out. You are advised to update your settings at the earliest convenience.

The new settings are:

General Servers (Non SSL) on ports 119, 23, 1818 or 8080:
- news.astraweb.com
- eu.news.astraweb.com (European servers)
- us.news.astraweb.com (U.S. servers)

Secure Servers (SSL) on ports 443 or 563.
- ssl.astraweb.com
- ssl-eu.astraweb.com (European servers)
- ssl-us.astraweb.com (U.S. servers)

I use Grabit and it sometimes refuses to connect. In that case, I close it, accept the unhandled exception error and open the nzb again. Very odd!

Thats just grabit mate i used to love it and now for want of a better word its sh*te, i keep telling my dad to get shut its as too many bugs, try sabnzbd its miles better.

@Jooooles im sure them server details have been the same for a long time now mate ive never used any others i usually use port 563 with ssl i get less probs for some reason and I cant swear to this but im sure it sometimes gets past vermin media's throttling. You may need to forward the port in your router also mate. If your still having probs tomorrow drop me a pm and ill check my settings and let you know what im using.

Ok Ive now installed sabnzb and im running it with astraweb and it still wont accept port 563 SSL

So Im thinking it has something to do with my wireless router not accepting port 563 ?? but I dont understand why it is not accepting it.

Anyway Im running on a Sky Broadband wireless router so can someone give me some a little help here as Im kind of stuck where to go next.

Cheers for the heads up on sabnzb though marra I like it )

anyhelp guys !!!!!!!

Ok Im in my sky router settings but I cant find an option to add a port access are anything.

anyone point is in the right direction please.

Ok I have went into my sky router http://192.168.0.1/ and I have set the port as astra 563 / ive also enabled the TCP/UPD as shown in pic one.

Router pic 1.JPG

I then went into inbound services and selected the service I set astra port 563 etc etc and also entered my ip address as in pic 2.

router pic 2.JPG

I then went to firewall services and selected the service I set up astra as in pic 3.

router pic 3.JPG

Its still not working as ive used a port checker and it is saying my port 563 is still unreachable as in pic 4.

What am I doing wrong as It still wont open Im lost at this stage.

Another thing I noticed was that after I rebooted my router my ip address changed the last 2 digits at the end, do I need to make a static ip address are something.

surely I shouldnt have this much trouble getting my SSL connection working as it used to work fine.

I might just go back to the usual unencrypted port 119 and forget about it lol

Did lorrebreaker's idea work mate if it did and it dont work when you take it out of dmz have a look if spi firewall is enabled in your router it should be but ive seen other routers without it enabled as default, tbh more i think of it more i think it shouldnt be the router causing problems do you have skype installed by any chance if i remember right that uses ssl ports (563 i think) if so go into advance settings and change the port.

does it work without SSL?

that would suggested it's not a port forwarding issuem have u tried a different port?

you shouldn't need to mess about with port settings. The connection is initiated from your homework so your router just NAT the connection to Astraweb.

Just checked with my mate who is on Sky and astraweb and SSL works fine on their router without any special settings. My guess is local to your PC. have you tried another PC ? Have you tried it after you have switched off all firewalls and AV on your PC ?

I take it that connections works without SSL ?

Might sound stupid mate but are you sure youve typed the hostname in correctly!

I can second that i checked with a mate and he didnt need to go into his router either, I think hes said its ok without ssl mate thats what got me thinking skype good point with the firewall though which firewall are you using Jooooles?

are you still struggling with this mate i know you wont want to hear this but the last 2 days i think theres been something wrong at astrawebs end or it could just be me having problems now too im getting a connection its 500kbs though as opposed to the 3.8mb i normally get ive changed servers to the normal one and im getting full speed.

Thanks for all the feedback and Ideas, I actually gave up on it and went back to non SSL and the usual port 119, port 563 didnt even work when I connected the lappy direct to the router so I just gave up after about 6 hours of messing about lol

The skype thing might be a problem as I installed it a couple of weeks ago but never thought It could be a problem, My firewall is (Online Amour) and Im using AVG I just got rid of Norton because its just to large if you know what i mean.

Anyway I will try and uninstall skype, I reset my router back to default anyway now so thats back to normal, Online armour is a easy firewall to operate anyway add ports and programmes and stuff so I will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestions though it gives me a few more things to try.

I will post back when I get it running the morra lol )

Aye mate its running smashing on port 119 without SSL just when I tick the SSL box and change the port to 563 are 433 etc it wont connect and just says socket error.

never mind Ive never used SSL for 2 year but with all the latest news about virmin and sly being asked to help stop piracy I thought I better start using it ? better safe then sorry.

Plus I get the odd dirty movie and I dont want that in public (shit did I just say that lol)

To be honest with the big company's chasing the big nzb sites and closing them down I think everyone should be a little carefull noo.
