Are you installing it on your own machine?

I'd use a hardware keylogger if that was the case, maybe also use one if you have access to the target machine (if it isn't yours) as AV can detect most software keyloggers due to how they work. Remote keyloggers also need a way to send data back to you which might be a firewall problem.

One of the problems with installing any keylogging software is anti-virus and firewall. Even crap anti-virus software will catch keylogging software, you can make an exception to it, but some still kill the logger. You would also need to open your firewall up to let the data through as most send to a web server. This then becomes a problem if you dont want the internet to get your passwords and stuff, most also send data unprotected.

For your own machine it would be better to get a hardware solution, as Spectre says, it'll cost money but be a lot easier and safer. You just plug it in and it is undetectable by anti-virus of anti-malware programs. When you want to read the data file you just open a console and type a specific command and it dumps the contents of the buffer to a text file. The 2mb buffer can contain upto 6 months worth of logging.

If you dont want to spend any money then just download a keylogger (not remote type) and turn off your anti-virus when you run it. I would suggest that if you only want to grab someones password for a specific site it doesnt need to be run for very long, thus minimising your unprotected state.

You would probably need to turn off your anti-virus before downloading the keylogger then install it and run it grab the logging file and uninstall it, then turn your anti-virus back on. Using a local keylogging program should mean you wont need to mess with your firewall.

Here's a USB and PS2 version depending on your keyboard. Other websites may have them cheaper.

To be honest I can't see any that don't involve taking the laptop apart and messing inside. So it looks like software is going to be your only option.

Here are a few sites on the subject.

Hardware Keylogger - KeyGrabber Module - installation

Professional Keylogging - Blog - www.technicalinfo.net

This one is a mini pci card if your laptop has a slot. It's way too expensive though at $197

External USB keystroke logger - tiny 2"x0.9" device - track and record keystrokes
