I have a HP OMNIBOOK XT6200 laptop, I need to upgrade the ram. The ram installed is a 512MB DDR PC2100, I want to know if I could use PC2700 or PC3200 ram. I have researched and come across with PC2700 and PC3200 which are backward-compatible of PC2100. I want to know if this will work on my laptop is my laptop compatible with these rams.

Your MB has 2 slots and will take PC2700 DDR333 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. PC23200 DDR400 is backward compatable with PC2700 and PC2700 is backward compatable with PC2100 DDR266. Just make sure you get Non ECC type which your MB is rated for.

"techquest" Do you mean I can't have PC2100 DDR266 and PC2700 DDR333 together in the slot.

Usually all that will happen is the faster RAM will run at the speed of the lower RAM. (So, your DDR333 will run at DDR266, to match the 2100)

Sometimes, the unit will complain and not boot with differing speeds, but it's unusual these days TBH. (Especially on the branded RAM)

Yes that is correct and it is always best to install like modules in tha slots.

Dazza is spot on and the mem will revert to the lowest DDR Mhz rating. Sometimes though a miss match in mem will cause problems that are not obvious.
