I have just recieved a new laptop and the old one is being taken away.
Before it goes is there a way I can do a snapshot of my OS and copy it onto my new laptop without loosing all the programs, settings and files?

you cant do a snapshot per se as the hardware will be different but windows has something called "files and settings transfer wizard" under start > programs > accessories.
Run it, its pretty good and easy to follow.

Its exactly same laptop - Dell XPS M1530 only thing changed is the processor upgraded to 2.5ghz core duo.

if u have vista on it do a back up to dvd's or an external hdd and then just do reverse to put back on new laptop

its Vista ultimate - how do I do the backup as a snapsho, so it will be exactly the same as my old laptop? I have an external HD which will need to backup 140gb of data.

or if you have another computer in your network, you can share a folder to copy your files
