I am looking for simple way to put Ghost images onto some external drives.

It for work and I use a DOS version of Ghost and some dedicated hardware, I was looking for another way using my laptop and a USB to IDE cable (to take it on the road).

Is there an alternative to Norton Ghost that I could use, I only need to be able to drop an image onto the drive. My laptop has dual boot WinXP and Win2000.

Norton Ghost 2003 comes with USB drivers as STD as that is what we use at work.

1 bootable CD and external drive

There is also an app called Ghost for Linux. Its a free app very similar to Norton Ghost and in some cases it is better for it.

also acronis true image home is a winner :)

Thanks for the help, I tried the trial for True Image but it does not work with
.gho files.

I have the ghost images, but it looks like it may not be practical with the parts/software I have. Thanks for looking.

if you have .gho and .ghs files, then you can only use Norton Ghost unfortunately.

and only the correct version also.

I have found different versions of Ghost (pre 2003) can be quite picky

I stopped using ghost last year once I discovered Acronis true image.
for me ghost reported too many errors , and lost confidence. I like acronis because
you can create hidden partitions. access it from pre woindows boot, and specify a loaction to and from. incremental backup is a bonus.

Another plus for Acronis TrueImage is that it isnt a Norton product.

Agree absolutely, we use Acronis at work, for all sorts of tasks and its much better than the now bloated and IMHO overrated Ghost.

An alternative if you have a LAN is to use ghost with netbootdisk you can auto map a network drive and then ghost your image there.
