If he's not got s-video on the TV too, then grab the cable femalelizzard says, plus a standard s-video cable and a switchable SCART block like this one: Scart Adaptor 3 RCA Phono SVIDEO SVHS AV Adaptor UK on eBay, also, Other Satellite Cable, Satellite Cable Freeview, Consumer Electronics (end time 08-Dec-08 00:44:35 GMT)

When connected to the TV the scart block should be set to IN.

If he doesn't have an AV button/mode on the laptop the resolution should be set to 800x600, this does mean the picture is likely to overscan though.

vga to scart not carry picyure and sound?its starting to make a bit more sense now might just tell him get a divx player

VGA doesn't carry sound. Also you'd have to make sure you plug into an RGB SCART, socket as VGA is a RBG/HV signal. Even then, there is no garauntee it would work - it would depend on whether the graphics chipset is capable of providing a VGA feed without the horizontal and vertical syncs.

A DivX player would certainly boot quicker. You can get them with USB ports so you can attach FAT32 formatted drives and thumbsticks, so you don't have to burn discs all the time. Most of the newer ones upscale when connected to an HDTV over HDMI - future proofing for when your dad's TV needs replacing (I've not seen a SDTV/EDTV for some time).

yeah will probably be the handiest and as you said will help him for when he gets a hdtv in the future, cheers for the info guys

Hi

I am in the process of buying a New Laptop(as old one not working anymore) and maybe a new TV.

Wanting more information on watching movies from laptop through TV.

Before I buy i just want some recommendations and advise before i buy so i am aware and can easily watch.

Iv considered two options. HDMI and VGA. On a tight budget as may have to buy both items as TV starting to go so will replace or fix.

Getting HDMI onTV and Laptop seems the best option but the most expensive.

Want opinions and advise on VGA. What is quality like when watching through VGA? would it be the same as laptop or would you lose quality? Also what features/specs do you require on Laptop. Do you require any features other than a VGA port? How do you connect Audio? do connect through the headphones jack or do you require a seperate feature.

Anyone have VGA? Is it worth getting VGA or do i spend that little bit extra for HDMI?

Any help appreciated

i use VGA on laptop to samsung 42" LCD,

quality is awesome no complaints from me, only problem is sound, u want sound from TV not laptop...so i invested in logitech 2.1 speakers,,,,,they are wicked, sounds like surround sound for cheap price aswell!!

i wanted the audio to be via my 5.1, but couldnt sort that out. as my tv doesnt have audio in! only audio out! but VGA is to my knowledge HD!

so go for it is my recommendation!

It actually seems to depend on the TV rather than the connection.

Some people claim HDMI to have a sharper picture over VGA. And in fact I thought the same until I changed from a budget Hyundai 32" HDTV to a Samsung 37" HDTV. I now find little difference in the picture sharpness between the two connection methods close up and none at all at a comfortable viewing distance.

However, I do find VGA that little bit washed out compared to HDMI (NB despite it being over 12 months old, I still haven't calibrated against DVE).

For what its worth, my Samsung has a 3.5mm stereo input for the VGA channel. You will get better sound from the logitech speakers though.

If you want optical/SPDIF for your 5.1 there are several USB and PCMCIA soundcards on the market.

Thanks guys as i have decided with VGA as most laptops have VGA.

Anything to look out for in a TV then? or simply one with a VGA connection?

If you want to use the TV's speakers rather than those of the laptop, make sure there is a method of connecting the laptop's headphone out socket to the TV. This will either be RCA/phono or 3.5mm mini jack.

Having said that you could grab a set of 2.1 speakers like supra has, the sound would probably be better for bass too.
