anti virus firewall ect... free ?

If you've got a hardware firewall, and most routers come with hardware firewalls, a software firewall isn't really needed. But many, including myself, use the windows built in firewall; [winkey]+[R] > firewall.cpl

Failing that comodo is free and has been recommended by several members here.

Comodo also do a free av package. Some members use the free versions of AVG or Avast.

Don't forget about spyware and adware. These can be sorted by Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware and/or hijackthis.

The problem with using the windows firewall is that it only does incomming protection and not outgoing. Try ZoneAlarm as it does both and the latest has an anti spyware facility that you can turn on.

Never had any problems using ZA.

Agreed, and I should have stated that.

But to play Devil's advocate for just a second: If you're running windows firewall in conjunction with AV, and scan regularly for spyware and adware do you really need outgoing protection apart from on 'zero day' attacks, when there is unlikely to be a fix available anyway?

Forgot about ZA. The personal edition ZA is also free. For those that don't use Firefox or Opera, it has the added advantage being able to blocking ads.

if you had a spare old pc lying around you could setup a smoothwall linux box, better than that windows based stuff. Although may be overkill.
