Read this story and heard about it on the national news, Driver gets 10 years probably out in 5 with good behavior. Personally until they actually dish out stiffer sentences for Drink/Drug/Mobile phone driving this is likely to go on and on.

You take a life you should get life full stop

It's terrible what happened but not effectively murder. Effectively manslaughter though, " four counts of causing death by dangerous driving ". Should have got 20 years minimum

Murder Manslaughter argument.
Basically for you to murder it needs to be premeditated, I'm sure he didn't plan that but, we all know what can happen once you take your eyes off the road.
For me the way to do this is prevention, if seen caught , on your phone or anything that distracts you some have even been caught playing handheld games consoles and watching tv they should be banned.
In the case of truck drivers if caught a min 2 years banned no if buts were's or when's.
Every trucker should be made to go on an aware course every 12 months paid for by their companies and show them the video above.

If you knew the consequence then you can't moan when your banned.

No mate, their sentences were too lenient

I totally agree. Just doing a comparison of a tragic completely avoidable negligent accident to premeditated grooming leading to sexual abuse and rape of a minor.

Sorry working in Safeguarding I feel these things hard

He was effectively given that sentence, that is 10 years on all four counts of causing death by dangerous driving, but the sentences are to run concurrently........ What is wrong with these judges ?

Take on board why @nara has posted the thread. How many of us have taken our eyes off the road to adjust sat nav look at a txt or something like that. Most people do it and it only takes seconds for it to have disasterous concequences. This polish guy was totally out of control but even a quick eyes off the road can lead to a similar outcome. Certainly made me reflect . cheers @nara for the post

Tragic. I was lucky, I glanced at my mobile when a text came in as I was leaving a golf course and nearly ended up on my roof on the 18th green. Could easily have been something like this, that clip will certainly stop me from ever doing it again. Thank you for posting it @nara

Just to add to this.
This guy had only signed a disclaimer an hour prior to this incident, stating he would not use a mobile phone whilst in a company vehicle.

I have just found this on the net, as I was unsure that this was the case.

Even whilst using bluetooth, the phone must be in a cradle.

I bet quite a few of us fall foul of this.

[h=3]Am I able to talk on my phone using a hands free kit whilst driving?[/h]Talking on a hands free kit is deemed to be within the law as the individual is allowed to push buttons but they are not allowed to actually hold the phone. This means that the phone should be kept in a cradle which is attached to the dashboard of the car. If an individual is using a hands free but is still holding the phone to press buttons then they will be in contravention of the law.

Mines in a holder but I do a nifty simple trick when I get a call or text when I'm driving,

Just don't f""kin answer it

Just watched this, totally and utterly saddening and sickening at the same time.

When the law thinks that copyright infringement can result in ten years in prison spell when no death is involved, you know they the world is screwed up!

Let's all be honest, we have all at one time or another did things we shouldn't whilst driving. as a truck drive I can see into cars that pass me doing 70+ on motorways. Most have a phone on knees texting etc, some have paperwork etc and some have a tablet on display doing work. Parents are constantly turning round feeding, sorting kids out, Som even change nappies on The move.Kids not belted in, babies in mothers arms not belted in ( mother is) .lots not wearing seatbelts. it all happens but truck driver get the most blame every time. nope he shouldn't have been doing what he did but we all make mistakes.
Anyone using equipment not aided to driving should be banned, even just lighting a fag is a distraction.
just saying like.

A truck needs 3 times the braking distance of a car doing between 30-45mph and the damage of impact is far greater.
Here's a bit of a read explaining why truck drivers need to be ultra vigilant. How many times have you been driving with a truck sat a few feet from your bumper ?.

Driver behaviour Lorry drivers are often blamed for travelling too close to other vehicles. Video footage of both motorway driving behaviour and crashes makes it clear that drivers may:

Not be aware of the facts
Not believe them
Be convinced it won't ever happen to them
Simply not care
These issues remain a challenge for road safety experts to deal with.

Conclusion:-

There is a difference in braking efficiency between vehicle types. Technology has enabled braking efficiencies in excess of 100%.

The stopping distance of poorly maintained trucks will undoubtedly be far greater than the values found during the experimental demonstrations. However, a higher level of retardation may not be welcomed by drivers hauling 25 tonnes of steel rods positioned one metre away from their back.

They will always obey Newton's Laws and will want to keep going at the pre braking speed. That in itself causes health and safety problems.

Such a tragic story. We have a zero tolerance to mobile phones at work (bus driver) and only last week one of our drivers was caught texting while driving and was instantly dismissed.

The deterrent has to be heavy fines and bans even for first time offenders. A slap on the wrist and a "Next time ......" is not good enough.
I never take calls or texts while driving and if I think it's urgent I pull up somewhere safe and deal with it. The first and foremost thing to do when driving is to concentrate on driving with no distractions.
For me a £500 fine wouldn't go a miss or a straight 6 month ban, let's see how many do it then.

Absolutely agree. In the case of the driver at my work, apart from loosing their job our company have to report (by law) the matter to the traffic commissioner and this will ultimately result in an instant loss of their psv licence for up to a year and a minimum of a £1500 fine. The last chap who lost his job just a few months ago at work for the same reason was fined £2500 and lost his pcv licence for 6 months. This wreaked his career in bus and hgv driving and as a result!

Thanks for posting this like many of you have already said I have used my phone while driving before. I did stop though before I might have had to live with myself killing so poor innocent by stander , and haven`t do so for ages now this just hits home the consequences.
