Help!!

Ok so I just bought a new car well new for me, had my last one for 12 years!

Any way not sure how the tax system works now as it used to be just the paper thing which went with the car. So just went to see when the new tax would start from and says the 1st May :( feckers not losing almost 4 weeks worth of tax!

I know the person who I got the car off and they have obviously paid until end of May and won't cancel it till then and the new keepers doc won't go off till next week etc so does any body know the earliest I can do it so it renews for the 1st of June?

Cheers

Strictly speaking the previous owner should cash the car tax in on the day of sale and the new owner should tax it on the same day

If you know the person just state the actual sale date as 29th May, this will keep DVLA happy, if the Police check it will still be taxed as far as they are concerned, not to much to worry about mate :)

You can renew a week before I think

5 days before your tax is due to run out is the earliest. I fell for the same trap with our new car. We lost a full Months tax. The new owner must tax there own car regardless of previous tax history. Take your tax doc and Mot and money and all you get in return is a little receipt nothing to put in your car windscreen. It certainly looks illegal now with nothing to show.

i paid 5 months tax from taxing a car late in January, then getting a new (for me) car at the end of February . I drove the first car from around Jan 26th, untill feb 27th, but had to pay ALL of Jan, Feb and Mar tax for it, drove the 2nd car from Feb 27th, but had to pay all of Feb onwards tax for it

the new system is a complete con, both cars had tax for Feb paid for, in full, twice, so between myself, previous and new owners, across both cars, they had nearly a years worth of tax paid, for a 6 week period where 2 cars changed owners

just had this myself but on the flipside you do get a refund on any tax still outstanding.....

the car tax is not car transferrable anymore as you are now aware ( I only found this out recently ) but the person who originally taxed it does get a refund but I like you lost a whole month a bit of a con to say the least!!

its pretty much the following.

your car is taxed till end of may
you sell it middle of may
you and the new owner are buying David Cameron a drink to thank him for his generosity..
