Had to have Max put to sleep today. I'm absolutely gutted.
He was a 12 year old shepherd and was perfectly fine apart from his back legs had gone.

Really sorry to hear that, we lost our Lurcher about a year ago. Watching them go is heartbreaking, I cried like a baby but you owe it to them to be there when they go. Feel for you.

Feel for you mate :(
I know its said a lot but they really do become a big part of the family

:(

I'm finding it really hard being in the house without him.
He's normally lying at my feet and following me round like a shadow.
Thanks for all your posts guys it helps

sorry to here sad add my german shepherd put to sleep in the summer it was hard got a new puppy german shepherd couple of month back

So sorry for your loss.

I know just how you feel, we had our cat put to sleep 18 months ago and it is one of the worst moments I have had to deal with. Still pains me to think about that moment.

If he had been ill and suffering with cancer or something it would have been less painfull , but apart from his legs he was perfectly healthy.
He relied on me to protect him. He would have died to protect me , so to take him to put him down felt like i was letting him down.
I know it was the right thing to do because i could see in his eyes that he had had enough and if he could have talked i know he would have told me so but i miss him so much.
It's like putting one of your children to death,so hard.

It's a real shame losing a dog ( they are like a family member ) . When l had to have my last dog put to sleep , everyone in the house was gutted. I took the decision a week later to get another dog & it cheered up everyone ( even though , initially most were against it ).

I feel for you mate.
I don't think i would be strong enough to take him myself, the wife would have to do it.

Charlie you didnt let him down Bud you did the right thing and in time you'll realise that . Its horrible and heartbreaking I know , I've done it. You looked after the Dog all his life and it proves how much you cared for him because you're so upset. Think of the good times Pal.

Sorry to hear your sad news mate, been there 6 times now and number seven (14 y.o b/collie) is on his way, struggling to get up and trouble walking but he still enjoying his grub and wants to do stuff. There life is to short it's heartbreaking but you know the time and they let you know when they've had enough but it still hurts and takes some getting over.

The wife was in the car park crying her eyes out.

I thought i would be ok with it because i knew he couldn't carry on but when he was drawing his last breaths i just lost it.
I could never go through that again.

Thanks guys for all your kind words .

I didn't click 'like' because it didn't feel right. 'Thanks' didn't feel right either.

This is a decision I will have to take again. Not this year (hopefully) maybe next.

On the other hand all my dogs have been rescued from somewhere or other so I think...what sort of shit life would they have had otherwise?

You cared. Nuff said.

Very sad news indeed mate. Making a decision like this will tear you up with guilt and loss, but the truth is you've stopped Max from suffering any longer and shown just how much you loved him.

As they say, time heals but never forgets. The pain you're all feeling now will subside into fond memories.
