Finally i can cancel my package with sky and get rid of the excuse of a router they provide. Been looking at other providers and i want to be able to use my own router. Not sure who is best. Read some reviews and alot of them slate support etc... I cant get virgin :(. Ive seen some smaller providers such as XILO.

What ISP would people recommend. I get around 16mb speeds

are you looking to subscribe

more info needed

Depends what you need M8. They all go up and down though. I'm happy with BT at the moment but they were shite not so long back. Plusnet are doing good deals too - but they were shite a few years back. Try the comparison sites unless you have some specific needs.

well i was looking at bt and talk talk. Talk talk seems like a no frills provider and they have bad support apparently. But ive never rang sky in 12 months wanting broadband support. Also talk talk allow you to use your own equipment. BT were a bit more expensive

TBH, I wanted a bundle including phone, fibre and TV which is why I ended up at BT as the best option round here. Everyone's needs will be different, you can use your own equipment with Plusnet too I think?

you can use your own equipment with any isp except virgin
the fibre systems use vdls/vdls2 modems on some network and some use the openreach modems
also check topcashback or quidco for signup deals
if you cant get virgin them your limited to the openreach network of suppliers. so ee, bt, plusnet, sky, and talktalk are the main ones
for good deals then plusnet and bt with cash back are the main ones I would be looking at
ee use vdsl2 modems so to use your own router you need a bt openreach modem

Thats not entirely correct, you have to use their modem but you can use your own router, i put my superhub to modem only and have a asus blackhawk router which kills the superhub 3 times over.
I have never understood why sky locked their routers only on the network, I also nearly took out sky - i cancelled the order when the fitter told me he had to put their router in place of my already well established network.

you still have to use there equipment as virgin do not supply connecting settings . modem mode can be used and never said it couldn't .
you used to be able to get your own cable modem as for sky you don't need to use there equipment as there settings as supplied on there site
its just the stupid fitter that's mis-informed . you could have used your own modem. this depends on the type i.e adsl or fibre
then there is a few types of fibre modems

Assuming it's ADSL (not cable/fibre) you can use a third-party router with ANY ISP although you have to jump through some hoops to get the details you need. For example, Sky will likely not give you the username/password but there are tools to extract them from the router.

The Sky fitter has to put their router in (T/C) but you can take it out when he's gone ;)

I have virgin cable but also have talktalk as well as a back up.

The modem crashed the other week and the customer servce were fine, ran through a few settings and trials and then sent a new modem out without quibble.

As for speed they are slow here but I am in a village and assume that sky and bt etc will be the same speed as it must surely depend on the exchange (and there throttling at peak periods etc).

Used to have o2 broadband & phone then Sky bought them over. Now have a slightly better package but still using my o2 router. No Sky fitter came near the house to fit a Sky router.

Ok reviving an old thread here. Ive got Talk Talk fibre in now 38mb but not happy with the vdsl modem/router performance from Huawei HG635 VDSL 802.11ac, Just doesn't seem to cut it. Anybody got any recommendations on replacing with a third party vdsl modem/router?

try get a bt openreach modem and use your own router with this
