Hi guys.

I'm sure somebody on here should hold a field of expertise in this area so I'll give it a stab.

Do all electronic products sold in the UK have to have a CE marking?

I'm reading a lot of different things around the interwebs, about battery powered appliances not needing CE approval, or only certain types of electronics need it or only wall powered appliances.

If anybody is in the know I'd much appreciate their advice as I'm totally scratching my head :S

Cheers

You'll need a proper guru for that one M8. For example, there's a boatload of directives i.e. you can't say battery-operated is exempt because although radios are outside the scope of the Low Voltage directive, they fall under the Radio Equipment directive.

If you're sleeping badly you could do worse than start here but it's not for the faint-hearted lol

I've already done a bit of googling and that article was amongst the websites I have already perused. I got a right headache lol

but its left me just as confused...

Say I wanna bring in a pair of hair curling irons from the national republic of yorkshireistan and the manufacturer hasn't assessed them for CE approval, am I allow to flog them?

It would help if it gave a definitive list.

What about all the ebay merchants? I've purchase a crap ton of generic electronic items and half of it isn't CE approved. Should ebay not be policing these sales?

That's why I thought 'Sod that', I'll post the link and have another beer lol

There's people out there making shed-loads interpreting the legislation!

It's a complete minefield so if you buy a few bits and bobs probably best to ignore it. If you plan to sell stuff that's a different issue. You'd have to quiz the manufacturer/distributor. Even if it doesn't need a CE mark AFAIK it still needs a Certificate of Compliance.

Not that it seems to make any difference - we don't seem to be awash with court cases lol
