Hi folks need a bit of info ,

me and the misses are planing going to new york in november and december time for a week,

kind of a romantic gesture for xmas but yeah need some info,What area should we stay in and the best sites to book through i`m in aberdeen so probably have to fly down south first to cach a connecting flight

Should we book flights and hotels seperate or combined?

Cheers

Mike

I went few years ago in nov time.
Stayed at the Roosevelt hotel in manhatten.
Just round the corner from Times square/broadway etc.
Great location.
Flew with American airlines into Newark.

Dress warm! We went a few years back Thanksgiving weekend: going on an open top bus is great fun, but it is baltic at that time of year.

Unless you want to go on a trip of all New York (and as an extra romantic idea) get a limo to your hotel - book one before you leave not that expensive and well worth it.

You want to be stopping in manhatten, stop up around 45 up to 59th street, 5th, 6th avenue, or broadway area. Think emire states buiding is 39th street with maceys around that street. Going any lower in streets then you'll get out of it a little until you really get low down on street numbers and you start hitting little italy and china town. The open top double deckers are a good way to see it all with jump on jump off anywhere. Its not cheap though (I think £45 ish for a couple of days). Battery park area is nice with the ferry over to statin island and the statue of liberty. (i believe you cannot go up the statue now due to renovations). Check out ground zero area as that area is really coming on, I think they are building loads of new shops around the new transit hub at ground zero. Check out coyote ugly bar over on the east side (i think), national history museum up the side of central park and a favourite of ours is Jimmy corner bar at 44/45 street for some reasonable beer prices.

i went Dec 2010 and going again in Dec this year with the girlfried, we flew from glasgow to Newark direct with continental we stayed in W at the corner of times square New York Hotels | W New York - Times Square
Hotle was amazing looking to stay there again they have an offer on the website for buy one night get 40% off the next night but you need to arrive on a Thurs, Fri, Sat.

if you need any othe info let me know

go there every 2 years but go in Feb as that when they have there big sales on, a bit like our boxing day ones, always stay around times square, last time stopped in crowne plazza and it was shit hot. best airline we have been with is delta out off manchester into jfk. cab fare is about $50 from airport into town, newark its about $85. best way to get about is a nym card as you can get on the buses and metro get a 3/5/7 day card well worth it. food any where if your down town at dinner time go in the workers cafe's cheap food and loads off it. Night time goto the one off the many pubs and steak house's loads off food and good value. Dont forget the cheesecake best place is behide the marrieot hotel times square where it all started. $6 a slice but its massive.

Best place to book is expedia book flights then book hotel and the shuttle bus if you need it its cheaper if you go over the weekend for some daft reason normally fly out 10am so get there for dinner time 1pm and fly back 6-8pm so get back here early 6-7am ish. any more info you need drop us a line

Best tip is take very few items out with you and wear wot you buy and bring back full/rammed dirty suitcases that way customs cannot charge you any tax owing ;-) works everytime.

Sounds guys for the info as i`m at work today i`m gonna go and have a look for tickets just now so you think booking seperate will be better off then?

Regards
Mike

Just do a bit of home work mate, play one against the other. Look at the price of flights, plus choose a hotel you would actually like to stop at not just one that pacakage deals include. Do the sums and see which way works out best for you. With package deals you may have to fly from a airport down in england but if you price up from an airport close to your it may cost a little more but be more suitable that heading south just to save a couple of quid. We usally book everything independent and it's usally much cheaper.

last time we went , we booked flights and hotel serperate , stayed at milford plaza right behind times square .
Dont take many clothes leave plenty room in yer suitcase mate , designer clothing is cheap cheap cheap !
please spend a day at central park its an eye opener and where the locals go to chill out .
Take a boat trip to see the bronx and stuff , its well worth the dosh.
Also if u wanna splash out a little , take yer wife on a helicopter trip at night through manhatten its BRILLIANT , but around 70 quid a person.
dont forget to go up top empire state building , them lifts are FAST and scarey hahahah

EDIT .. oh and dont go up any dark side streets , it can be intimidating. stay to the main roads

last time we went stayed at "the metro hotel" ideal location just off 5th ave and empire state was literally just around the corner Maceys was 5 mins walk.

we flew BA and got an upgrade to world traveler outbound and had extra leg room etc, it was a deal with cresta travel.

when i booked it was much much cheaper to do the deal rather than book separately, check it all out before you start splashing the cash.

tbh there was so much to do and see in manhatten we didnt go too far, whilst you have to watch your self as you would and any town or city in the uk i or Mrs didnt feel intimidated or threatened in any way at any time.

i second the clothes bit, we got levis, leather jacket timberland boots etc etc all at less than dollar equivalent to uk. ie stuff for example £100 here was for sale for $100 but you can haggle the price down. i know this is shopping but its worth getting a bus to the big designer retail park in new jersey cost a few dollars on the bus and takes 45 minutes or so but the tax is less in jersey.

I typed a big post ealier today but lost it, within had reference to what I think references the above thread.

Out in elizabeth, new jersey is an out the way shopping mall called jersey garden malls, across the road is a hotel called the country inns and suites hotel, very cheap and very good standard. We use it all the time when we go cruising out of bayone. Free transfers to newark airport and back and you can walk across to the mall. Our little secret.... massive outlet plenty to do both day and night with a bar or two and so much shopping.

We were there for 4 days, sightseeing, not shopping. so much to see, we have to go back again. Our helicopter trip was cancelled due to weather, but we were sent a cheque about 2 weeks after we got home. Highly recommend the night bus trip (like I said, DRESS WARM!) and if you get a chance go to Johns Pizza near Times Square. We fell off the night bus tour half frozen, went in there for a couple of hours and had the best pizza we ever tasted!

When we arrived, I was awake at 5am, so i went over to Grand Central and took some photos (we were staying in the Fitzpatrick Hotel a few minutes away. Got some great pictures at about 5.30 with hardly anyone around, picked up some coffee and croissants for brekkie for the two of us, then formatted the memory card on the way home on the plane!

Had a quick look around today must say the price's have gone up a wee bit, but if you go just to shop then its still a massive saving when you find the right place's to shop e.g out off town retail parks, discount stores e.g. century 21 opposite ground zero like tk max but a lot better if your lass is in to shoes/bags its like a wet dream for women. Are lass picked up a £1000 bag for the massive sum off $350 so about £250 she was well pleased.

Also the shops on 5TH Av e.g prada/gucci/apple and the like top brands you know the piss take ones over here, my god the price in $ is cheaper than the price in £ so your on a winner from the off, got her a ring $450 in gucci over in meadowhall in goldsmiths it was £620 so just how much are we being taken the piss out of?????.

Anyway enjoy the trip which ever you do shop or just see the sights. i would live over there in a flash if i could get a job on there rail/metro system.
