Trouble with news.google.co.uk, groups.google.co.uk?

Anyone else having trouble getting to these websites from NTL? I'm
getting timeouts whenever I try. (Same with *.google.com.) Fortunately
www.google.co.uk still works for me.

However if I access them from another provider I can get through. (I've
checked and the hostnames resolve to the same IP(s) from both places.)

Specifying an explicit proxy (cache1-cmbg.server.ntli.net:8080) also
seems to fix it. According to the checker on broadband-help.com, when
I've got no proxy configured, then I'm not going through a (transparent)
proxy - don't know how reliable that is.

The connection from an NTL host appears to get stuck in SYN_SENT.

I'm in Cambridge, if it makes any difference. I've been noticing these
timeouts for a few days.

Both work OK here.

Hi Jacob. Don't know if it's any use, but there's some discussion of ntl's
proxies going on in cableforum at the moment:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=15567

(It comes up in the yahoo mail thread too.)

That thread suggests the broadband-help.com checker isn't entirely
reliable. However, _none_ of the checkers mentioned there detects a
proxy when I haven't got one explicitly configured, and other people in
Cambridge say that transparent proxies have been turned off here for a
while.

And yet, groups.google and news.google are still both unreachable to me
unless I explicitly configure a proxy. Which implies that it's not a
proxy issue (or that we have undetectable proxies).
