Noticed this on a freeware site i use often.
Its Microsofts Security Essentials which is free and available for download now at these links.

Microsoft Security Essentials for Vista 1.0.1611 Download - Freeware Files.com - Security/Privacy Category

Microsoft Security Essentials for XP 1.0.1611 Download - Freeware Files.com - Security/Privacy Category

I can't give a review as i just loaded it today on my virtual pc running xp.
One thing i did notice is that its very light and easy to use.
If you have used Defender or Onecare then this will be easy for you.

Don't know if i would recommend it as a primary defence but might be worthwhile trying on an old clunker you might have lying around or a virtual pc.

Quick Update
Here is a link with more info.
Thanks for the heads up Hamba.

I've been using it now for a few months, and it works very well.
Doesnt hog much system resources. I've purposely thrown a few different files/trojans etc at it and has picked them all up and deleted them immediately.
Plus its free.

It's not got all the bells and whistles, but I dont need that crap.

It's got to get the thumbs up from me

problem is, hoppy, there are much better programs out there, and they are free too.

Yeh i agree fella and it wont get much further than my virtual pc at the moment.
I always play it safe with any new MS product, especially security but reviews seem pretty good so far and i noticed Bodser seems happy with it.
I don't know if the feedback is positive because its free or if people genuinely rate it.

reading the industry scuttlebutt, they are all in stitches, or that's how it seems. AV wise, it performs less well than any of the , most used, free progs. it does have low overheads, but only because it does less, than most.

even so, it does a reasonable job.

Microsoft explores free option with Security Essentials

The software company's head of consumer security discusses its free anti-virus service, Internet Explorer 8 and the decline of phishing

That was a good read and i will be interested to see if she is right.
I see macafee and co may contest it in the European court!
If its successful then it will take a huge chunk of their business.

I hope it does work tbh but they are using the same engine as onecare and that alarms me as it was terrible.
A few of my mates had onecare installed and after 10 months i had to format and install as their systems were hammered as its protection was awful.

I genuinely hope it works as its free and it would be nice for novice users to not have to worry about basic protection.

My Da's machine was running slow today, ESET seemed to be utilising virtually all the cpu. Un-installed it & machine seemed much better. Tried to put AVG free on for him to replace ESET but kept getting an installation error so stuck Microsoft-Security-Essentials on for him. Hopefully should do the job for him as a light user. Fingers crossed.
HH.
