i've been asked to swap a coin operated electric meter and i'm wandering if i'm allowed to do it (ie does it need to be certified) the building has one supply/main meter then each flatlet has its own coin meter which can be individually isolated. its a straight swap - like for like so i dont see any reason why it would need a cert but i'd like to be certain as i never touch what i'm not allowed to.
tia :)

Pretty sure you will need a certificate esp if its in a flatted property.
Landlord saftey rules are tight m8.
Ie dont fook with the gas or leccy.

If something went wrong and a fire or something occurred then you would be looking at a prison sentence.

Adam you are not allowed to touch anything past the meter mate (including the meter) the only meter you could install would be one to test if the existing meter was working correctly.

You need npan numbers before you can use the meters with suppliers, and you fitting a meter will 100% not have an npan number as they are generated by your local supplier.

You can get a company to fit them for about 40 - 250.

I payed 38+vat for 10 meters (each) a few months back.

search google and you will find them much cheaper than going to the usual suspects ;)

Electricians - Domestic or approved contractors - part p etc are not allowed to touch the meters.... if you are working for a local supplier then you might well need some sort of certificate but I am not sure what you need, maybe a 2381, 2391 C&G ????

cheers for the replies fellas, i ended up doing it as i felt a straight swap was unlikely to need a cert. to clarify it was not a suppliers meter - i know not to touch that. the main meter (suppliers) split to feed 8 s/c flats, each in turn had its own coin operated meter which are property of the landlord.
anyhoo thanks again :)

Glad you got it sorted adam ;)

I thought you was trying to change the official suppliers meters....

You need to be certified to carry out most electrical work but not all like socket cahnges and light fitting changed etc, I would say because its a meter and the cables are probably 16mm or bigger then you would need to be certified to change it.

But I wont tell anyone if you don't.

Mickie

cant be definite but I think the wires were less than 16mm, the meters only rated for 60amps? I wouldnt intentionally break the rules, i'm not paid enough but if youre not telling then i feel safe enough :)

according to building regs, see attached.
providing you just replace the unit. and it is not the main supply meter, you can fit it with no legal problems. it is not even necessary to inform anyone of the change.

relevant info in in "Table 1"

thanks a lot for that mate, very good reading rep added
