I have a Draytek Vigor 2900 (non wireless) router connected to my Virgin broadband and have been given a Netgear ADSL wireless router.

Is it possible to "configure" and use the ADSL router as a wireless access point if I plug it into my cable router ?

Whadda ya think guys ?

Dunno to be honest.

I use a cheap TP-Link wireless router as an access point, very easy to setup, basically all I had to do was tick the box for enable wireless bridges then enter the MAC address of the 2nd router which I wanted as an access point.

I guess the best way is just to try it since I already have all the bits.

From your answers is looks like I might only be able to connect 1 PC to the internet at a time though. Probably end up buying an access point anyway.

Iv done it before on some Netopia wifi adsl routers.

You connect the modem to Port 1, then in the config turn on WAN bridging. May be different on your router.

Should be in the PC section.

But yes, i've done all sorts of weird shit with routers, they are very flexible.

As has been said, you can normally use a router on a network as a wireless bridge only, either avoiding, or turning off any modem specific features.

Give me the model number.

You possibly can do this, Your Draytek should support WDS (Wireless Distribution System) i have a Draytek dual WAN 2900vg, it depends if the other router supports it to. Or you could run a ether net cable to a LAN port and make connection to main router that way and basically use as a wifi ap / switch.

if by WDS, you would need to tell each router of the other routers MAC addresses and set up encyption, think some have an option just to use the security already set up on the wifi.

If you run a cable to use up a LANtoLAN ports on both routers and connect to it via wifi thus connecting to you network.

Check to see if your netgear supports DD-WRT as i would flash it with that, as that supports WDS and also you can assign the WAN port to the switch giving you 5 ports on it and it basically a switch with wifi.

If you connect the two routers wired it's straight forward, make sure both routers are part of the same network with unique IP's and Just turn off the DHCP of the 2nd router. The first router will allocate the correct IP settings for wireles clients.
